Little Oasis Review: Hidden Cafe In Outram Park With Chiffon Cakes From $2.50

Artisanal cakes and breakfast at Little Oasis

Little Oasis, nestled in the residential area of Outram Park, shies away from the bustle of the nearby CBD. As its name suggests, this quaint cafe offers a secluded oasis for those looking to unwind while sipping on a cup of coffee or tea in a comforting environment that’s not too far out of the city centre.

Apart from a standard list of cafe beverages, they serve a range of freshly-baked artisanal cakes, as well as breakfast and brunch fare. They also offer personalised, handcrafted cakes for birthday celebrations.

Food at Little Oasis

Avocado toast has fast become a mainstay on every cafe’s menu, thanks to a generation of millennials who love avocado-everything. As one of these millennials myself, I had to order the Avocado Egg Half Bagel ($7). This open-faced sandwich consists of half a bagel that was spread with mashed avocado and topped with a poached egg. 

At first glance, the avocado spread was a shade of pale olive that didn’t look enticing. However, I was pretty satisfied with its creamy, buttery richness as it was well-seasoned, with a slight tartness from lemon juice. Moreover, the generous sprinkling of chilli flakes and cracked black pepper gave the avocado spread a nice kick.

The bagel was rather ordinary and seemed to be slightly stale. I would have preferred that they toasted it slightly more. 

The poached egg was definitely the jewel of this dish. It was poached to perfection, with just the right amount of wobble, allowing for the Insta-perfect ooze of yolk porn.

Overall, this dish is your average avocado breakfast bagel, even though the poached egg was well-executed.

The Lemon Drizzle Cake ($6.50) is one of the signatures at Little Oasis. Baked in a mini bundt tin, the sculpted cake with its slice of lemon and sprig of thyme made for a pretty picture.

The cake was dense but still moist. Despite its dainty appearance, it packed quite the lemony punch. If you are a fan of lemon, you’d probably dig this. However, it was slightly too citrusy for me. 

Little Oasis has a selection of chiffon cakes, with flavours such as earl grey lavender, matcha and black sesame that rotate daily. I decided to try the Yuzu Chiffon Cake ($2.50) since it was on display.

This no-frills chiffon cake was topped with yuzu zest and had a fragrant citrusy aroma. I wasn’t expecting much at first as it looked so plain. 

However, I was floored when I tasted the cake. It was light, fluffy and moist, and had a pleasant yuzu fragrance, balanced with a tinge of tartness. This is the kind of cake that you wouldn’t tire of eating because it’s not singularly sweet. What’s more, at only $2.50, this slice of heaven doesn’t make a big dent in your wallet.

Ambience at Little Oasis

With its proximity to the CBD area, Little Oasis is a chill cafe that’s nestled in an unassuming spot at the first floor of a HDB block in Everton Park.

The cafe is not big, but the neutral colours and chic decorations create the illusion of space. The touch of greenery adds a lush element, which further enhances the relaxed and homey atmosphere. 

It may be a little challenging to find unoccupied tables, as the cafe was already full when we were there at 11am. They do have a couple of seats outside if you don’t mind the heat.   

The verdict

Even though this might seem like a mainstream cafe, Little Oasis still has its perks, such as its chiffon cakes and relaxing environment. It’s definitely a hangout spot to consider if you’re in the vicinity and seeking a quiet spot. I wouldn’t mind spending a sedentary afternoon here, with a slice of their delectable chiffon cake while losing myself in a good book.
