This 47-Year-Old Bakery Has $0.90 Custard Puffs, $1 Buns And More In Queenstown

Love Confectionery in Alexandra has old-school buns and cakes

We’ve got a list of traditional bakeries in Singapore, and here’s one more to add to the list: Love Confectionery in Alexandra, just a short bus ride away from Queenstown MRT Station.

Love Confectionery was incorporated back in 1979, which makes them 47 years old this year. You’ll spot them from a mile away, with their super old-school signage and wood-fronted displays.

You can tell how traditionally made the cakes and bakes here are, by how they are simply stored in these displays on simple metal trays—no refrigeration necessary.

Unlike the fancy, modern cakes that we are more accustomed to seeing, the buttercream cakes that Love Confectionery is famous for feature old-school buttercream frosting. It’s typically whipped with margarine, rather than butter, allowing them to be shelf-stable at room temperature, and lending them that nostalgic flavour.

Each slice of these buttercream cakes is priced at just $2, and every piece starts with a base of the same sponge cake, said to be pillowy soft and fluffy. Available toppings include chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, and almond flakes.

Out of all the flavours we tried, our favourite was the peanut. Here, the sweetness of the cake is balanced by finely ground nuts, which bring a nutty, slightly salty flavour to each bite.

The jam option was a close second; think of this like an Asian-style Victoria sponge, with light sponge cake layered with just the right amount of buttercream and sweet berry jam.

The bakes at Love Confectionery are said to sell out as early as 2pm. Another hot seller is their Pandan Cake ($1.20), cottony soft with a faint pandan aroma.

Yet another fast-moving bake is the Custard Puff ($0.90), filled with bright yellow custard.

The choux puff was dry and airy, which complemented the thick custard filling that wasn’t overly sweet. While it wasn’t the best custard puff we’ve had, we couldn’t complain for the price of $0.90.

You’ll also find a small range of old-school buns here, in flavours such as Custard ($1).

The Luncheon Meat Bun ($1.10) is another classic.

This bake features a chunk of savoury luncheon meat wrapped in freshly baked bread. It’s on the smaller side, making it a convenient snack to tide you over before your next meal.

Do note that the cakes and bread here lean towards the milder side, with flavours that aren’t overly sweet or heavy. This may appeal to those who prefer more understated desserts, especially the older residents in the neighbourhood.
