Kaisendon fans, we’ve got good news for you: Tokyo’s cult favourite kaisendon restaurant MUKAI is now in Singapore! If you’ve been to Tokyo, you may have come across it before—their OG Shibuya outlet is tucked inside a repurposed Japanese house, complete with tatami flooring and horigotatsu-style low tables.
Now, MUKAI has opened its first overseas outlet at Plaza Singapura, bringing their towering seafood bowls to our Little Red Dot.
MUKAI’s Singapore outlet takes a more polished approach, with pale stone flooring, warm wooden panels, and a long central counter for diners to watch the chefs at work.
Instead of the more commonly used term Kaisendon, MUKAI calls their signature dish the Kaiho Don, which translates to “sea treasure”. Where a typical kaisendon usually comes with individual sashimi slices fanned out over rice, MUKAI’s version chops much of the seafood into smaller pieces before stacking them into a tall, IG-worthy mound.
Prices for the Kaiho Don start at $28.90++ for the entry-level Nami, scaling up through the Jo ($32.90++), Tokujo ($40.90++), and Kiwami ($52.90++). The most expensive main costs $79.90++ for the loaded Goku Goku, which is limited to 30 bowls a day.
This whopping number comes ringed with sashimi slices around a mound of chopped tuna, salmon, amberjack, sea bream, uni and ikura. There’s also a kids’ option, the Kaiho Don Kodomo, at $19.90+.
The restaurant also offers two set menus: HaĹŤ ($68++) and MUKAI ($99++), which bundle the higher-tier bowls with sides, miso soup and dessert.
Diners can also customise their bowl, choosing rice portion size, white or mixed grain rice, white or red vinegar, and condiments such as wasabi and ginger. The real signature move, though, comes midway through the meal: warm dashi, either katsuobushi or asari, gets poured over the remaining seafood and rice, turning the dish into a comforting ochazuke.
Beyond rice bowls, the menu also features different cuts of tuna, including Maguro Gobo ($15.90++), Maguro Namero ($11.90++), Maguro Yukke ($11.90++), and Maguro Daikon ($9.90++)—a savoury dish of tuna and daikon simmered in a sweet soy-based broth.
To celebrate the opening, MUKAI is running a 1-for-1 Kaiho Don promotion until 31 August 2026, available to the first eight groups of diners each day who order a Kaiho Don. The offer applies only to eligible Kaiho Don bowls, so it’s worth getting there early if you want to try before it wraps up.
