If you’re a die-hard caffeine addict like me, you might have heard of Narrative Coffee Stand at Bras Basah Complex.
While the specialty coffee cafe is somewhat of a “hidden gem”, it’s not frequently mentioned in mainstream reviews, nor does it have the same level of recognition as award-winning spots like Apartment Coffee. Still, this humble cafe has been quietly delivering quality coffee consistently. Aside from its stellar 4.6-star Google rating, Narrative has also popped up in several Reddit threads discussing the best coffee in Singapore.
We tried four drinks: Iced Long Black ($6.50), Hot White ($6), Signature “Dirty” ($7.50), and a filter ($8.50).
Let’s start with my favourite, the “dirty” coffee. For the uninitiated, dirty coffee originated in Tokyo, combining hot espresso with cold milk or cream to create a visually striking layered effect. The term “dirty” refers to the streaky look of the coffee steeping into the milk. This unique beverage became a hit in Thailand—I remember having my first sip in Chiang Mai and instantly falling in love with it.
At Narrative, their version features Earl Grey-infused milk and condensed milk at the bottom, topped with freshly pulled espresso. I loved the combination of the lightly sweetened milk and the bold espresso, with the bergamot fragrance of the tea adding an extra layer of flavour and making it more interesting than a regular dirty coffee. This dessert-like concoction was the perfect post-lunch pick-me-up.
If you want something lighter, consider a hot white instead. A single espresso shot comes by default, but you can opt for a double shot at $7.50. In hindsight, I should have gone for the double, as I found the latte too weak and milky for my taste.
Nicaragua Finca Libre beans are used here, with notes of yellow plum, navel orange, and milk chocolate. The espresso had a slight acidity and fruitiness, which gave the beverage an interesting flavour, though I personally would have preferred a darker, nuttier roast for a milk-based coffee.
That said, the milk was perfectly steamed with just the right amount of foam.
I’m usually a white coffee girlie—my go-to order is a cortado or piccolo—but the iced black really stood out during my visit.
The first sip of this seasonal blend wasn’t mind-blowing, but as I took my time to savour it, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. Named “Melondrama”, this blend uses 70% Finca Libre beans and 30% Colombia El Renacer for a juicy brew. The watermelon notes were the most prominent, with a melon-like sweetness lingering at the end.
The filters here are seasonal and change every few months. During my visit, there were three options available: Colombia Juan Martin ($8.50), Colombia El Renacer ($10), and Costa Rica El Naranjo ($7.50). I recommend chatting with the friendly staff, who can suggest a filter based on your preferences.
I tried the Juan Martin, an excellent brew that was smooth on the palate and well-balanced, with notes of stonefruit and aromatic floral undertones.
Narrative Coffee Stand’s space is small and compact, with a minimalist setup perfect for a quick coffee run. The seating area is limited, fitting around 10 people at once, including a few counter seats if you’d like to watch the baristas in action.
The cafe is a four-minute walk from Bugis MRT Station.
Narrative Coffee Stand is a must-visit for quality, consistent brews in a cosy and welcoming space. Be sure to drop by the next time you’re in the Bugis area!
