If authenticity is of chief importance to you, then the nasi padang at Sari Ratu is likely to impress. The founder himself hails from Padang, so dishes such as the Beef Rendang captures the city’s trademark flavours.

Aside from rendang, the restaurant is also famous for its Gulai Tunjang, which is beef tendon stewed in spicy coconut curry, and Sambal Goreng, where  stir-fry vegetables are enhanced by a piquant sambal sauce. Have those with your rice and you’ll end up with a thoroughly satiated belly.

2. Warong Nasi Pariaman

Founded in 1948, Warong Nasi Pariaman is believed to be the longest-running nasi padang stall on these shores. The stall has since left its mark on our food culture, feeding throngs of hungry people over the years, including a certain Fandi Ahmad, who apparently used to dine there every Friday.

Many regulars return for their dose of nasi padang, which shows the  consistency of taste that Warong has maintained over the years. The stall’s signature dishes are said to have remained relatively faithful to the recipes that first brought them widespread acclaim. Go for the Ayam Bakar, where barbecued chicken is doused in a rich coconut-milk gravy, and the succulent Beef Rendang for its enticing hints of sweet and spicy.

3. Rumah Makan Minang

Another nasi padang place that has been around for a really long time—since 1954 to be exact—Rumah Makan Minang’s snaking queues are testament to its great nasi padang.

Their Indonesian Tahu Telur ($8.50) is impressive: a towering pillar of fried tofu is mixed with eggs and adorned with bean sprouts, grated peanuts, and dark sweet soya. If you want some fish to go along with your rice, try the Botok-Botok ($7), which is steamed fish marinated in an array of grounded spices.

4. Late Night Nasi Padang

Some people limit themselves to a light bowl of cereal for supper, but if you’re the sort who eats voraciously in the wee hours of the night, head on down to Late Night Nasi Padang.

The stall opens till 3am in the morning and offers delectable dishes including Sayur Lodeh, Beef Rendang, Sambal Kang Kong and many more. Certain dishes such as the Sotong Hitam are weekend specials, so visit on a Friday or Saturday if you want to choose from a wider variety.

Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang prepares their dishes in the traditional Kapau style, so give this famous stall a shot if you’re into dishes of the spicier variety. Their Assam Pedas Fish is tangy and spicy, with a rich flavour that comes from the fish itself, which you can choose between Batang AKA Spanish mackerel and stingray. With its bright yellow coconut-based sauce, the Ayam Panggang doesn’t appear to be too fiery, but underestimate it and you’ll feel its spicy burn in no time.

6. Hajjah Mona Nasi Padang

Like the previous entry, Hajjah Mona Nasi Padang is located in the iconic Geylang Serai Market and draws a similarly large crowd to their nasi padang. Their Opor Ayam, which is chicken steeped in coconut milk, is an excellent dish; and their tender Beef Rendang, prepared with the right balance of spices and coconut milk, is a large reason why people keep coming back for more.

Aside from these coconut-based dishes, the Sambal Goreng is a great addition to any meal with its addictive, spicy notes.

When trying the fare at Hjh Maimunah Restaurant, it quickly becomes apparent why the restaurant has been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand. Dishes including the BBQ Sundanese Chicken, which comprises Sundanese-style barbecue chicken marinated in signature spices, and the Lemak Siput Sedut, which features fresh sea snails in a spicy coconut gravy, are all moreish creations that will leave you wanting more. The Terung Belado⁣ is highly recommended as well; these fried tender eggplants tossed in sambal chilli are a great choice of vegetables to go along with your rice and meats.

8. Che Rose Nasi Padang

The signboard claims that the stall has ‘probably the best rendang in Singapore’, and while that is debatable, there’s no question that Che Rose Nasi Padang serves up some excellent Chicken and Beef Rendang. Regardless of which meat you order, the rendang is said to be highly flavourful and tender. The rest of the dishes, such as the Sayur Lodeh and Asam Squid Curry, are similarly delicious and all have a homely and comforting taste.

9. Warung M. Nasir

If you are familiar with Mohamad Nasir bin Mohamed or, as he is better known, M. Nasir, you’ll know that he is something of a renaissance man. The ‘sifu’ of the Malaysian music industry is a singer-songwriter, composer, poet, producer, actor, film director and, more pertinently, the owner of Warung M. Nasir.

Within its bright pink walls, the stall serves some fantastic Beef Rendang ($5), Ayam Gulai ($5), Sambal Goreng ($4) and more. You’ll be spoiled for choice with the large variety of spicy dishes on offer.

10. Rendezvous Restaurant Hock Lock Kee

As with many other picks on this list, Rendezvous Restaurant Hock Lock Kee is steeped in history, having been a dining spot for thousands of British troops stationed in Singapore during the 1940s. After the British left in the 1950s, the restaurant shifted its focus to serving the nasi padang that they are most known and loved for today.

Check out the restaurant’s Cuttlefish Sambal (from $5.30), Korma Chicken (from $9.30), and Fish Curry ($5.30) for a taste of their highly regarded Western Sumatran dishes.
