New Bahru food guide

If you’re looking for new restaurants to check out this month, search no further. New Bahru, an up-and-coming lifestyle enclave in River Valley, has finally opened its doors. While not all dining tenants have officially launched—some will progressively open from now till September—we had a sneak peek recently to put together this best New Bahru food places list!

1. The Coconut Club

Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee The Coconut Club is now open at New Bahru! The popular eatery has outlets in Siglap and Beach Road, too. They’re most known for their flavourful coconut rice, where two-year-old jasmine rice is first cooked with a house-made rempah, then infused with fresh coconut milk that’s made in-house.

At this New Bahru eatery, fans can look forward to the outlet-exclusive Quail Goreng Berempah ($21++), featuring the brand’s famous coconut rice, anchovies, peanuts, fried egg, sambal, and a golden-fried quail with crispy rempah crumbs. If you’re not a fan of quail, their Signature Ayam Goreng Berempah ($18++) is available too!

Unit number: #01-14
Opening hours: Thurs to Tue 11:30am to 3pm, 5:30pm to 10:30pm

Fans will be happy to know that they can shop the brand’s Granola here, priced at $16 for a 260g packet and $28 for 500g. You can also look forward to freshly baked breads such as Smoked Cheddar & Chilli Loaf ($25) and Sweet Potato Rolls ($12), great for takeaway to share with the fam. Drinks-wise, get your caffeine fix in the form of a Black ($5), White ($6), or Matcha ($8)! We’ll update this story as soon as we get more information about their savoury brunch fare.

If you’re visiting on a weekend, check out their brunch menu, with hearty options such as Scramble Plate ($20++)—scrambled eggs, hummus, mushrooms, avocado, dukkah, and Turkish bread—and Shakshuka ($20++), featuring spiced tomato stew topped with two runny eggs.

4. Kotuwa

Here’s a vibey spot to bookmark if you’re hitting up New Bahru at night: Kotuwa. The Sri Lankan restaurant bar, founded by the famous Chef Rishi Naleendra, was awarded a spot on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list this year.

Here you’ll find the restaurant’s signature Kottu Rotti (from $25++), which is essentially chopped-up roti cooked with veggies, eggs, and gravy, alongside mains such as Lamb Shank ($42++) and a rich Crab Curry (seasonal price). For those who want something to drink, their cocktail menu is equally noteworthy, with options such as Machang Power ($25++)— Monkey Shoulder blended scotch, papaya, green tea—and Uncle Percy ($25++), a blend of white rum, Ceylon Arrack (traditional Sri Lankan spirit made from the coconut sap), soursop, and coconut.

Unit number: #01-03
Opening hours: Mon-Thurs 5pm to 11pm, Fri-Sat 12pm to 12am, Sun 12pm to 11pm

5. Huevos

ICYMI: you can get Huevos‘ cult-favourite tacos and nachos at New Bahru! The popular eatery often sports long queues at its OG North Bridge restaurant, so fans will be pleased to know that they now have a second location to visit for their Mexican fix.

You won’t go wrong with their tacos, available in flavours such as Baja Fish ($14++/$18++) and Birria Beef ($15++/$19++). Tacos are served in portions of two or three. Their Loaded Nachos ($20++), topped with chicken, guacamole and more, is another hot favourite for its massive serving!

Else, their Duck Guksu ($35++), a cold and refreshing dish of buckwheat noodles, barbecued duck, perilla seed sauce, and cucumber kimchi, is equally moreish.

7. One Fattened Calf

Word is in: One Fattened Calf is slated to open at New Bahru very soon! The local burger shop is known for their delicious beef burgers prepared with house-baked potato buns and grass-fed beef.

While there’s no telling as to what will be on the menu, and when exactly  the new restaurant will launch, we’re hoping that their OFC ButterBurger ($15) will make an appearance. This signature burger stars two slabs of cold grass-fed a 150g patty of premium New Zealand grass-fed beef, smashed on the grill and blowtorched before serving.

In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled on One Fattened Calf’s Instagram page for the latest updates!

8. Zhup Zhup by One Prawn & Co

If you love a good bowl of hae mee, you’ll be delighted to know that Zhup Zhup by One Prawn & Co is opening at New Bahru soon. The eatery, previously known as One Prawn & Co, was also a Michelin Bib Gourmand entry this year!

Here’s what we know so far: this second branch will offer Asian seafood dishes with a contemporary flair: think aged seafood and wood-fired grilling. We’re crossing our fingers that the same prawn broth will also be available at this outlet; when we tried it at their original eatery, the soup was creamy and rich, with a strong umami flavour.

There’s no official date for the New Bahru opening, so you’ll have to check in on their Instagram page for the latest scoop.
