Peranakan culture is a beloved part of Singapore’s culinary heritage, but it’s increasingly difficult to find traditional Nyonya kueh handmade in the old ways today. Fortunately, Nyonya Bites is one of the spots on our island where you’ll find these handcrafted snacks.
The stall is owned and operated by a pair of sisters, who learnt the art of making kueh from their mother. Their stall offers various kueh, steamed cakes, and even hot mains on selected days, which are all freshly made on the premises daily.Â
A must-try at this stall is their Ang Ku Kueh ($2), available in three fillings: Ginger, Roasted Peanut, and Tau Sar.Â
Each ang ku kueh has a thin layer of smooth and chewy skin, stuffed generously with their respective fillings. Surprisingly, we enjoyed the ginger filling, which I’d never seen anywhere else before, the most; it stood out for its distinct herbaceous taste. The roasted peanut ang ku kueh was also a close contender, boasting a thick, crunchy peanut paste filling.
Another kueh we tried was the Butterfly Blue Pea Kueh ($2.20), which is a popular pick among their regular customers. Each kueh comprises a coconut milk-infused, glutinous rice base, with a sweet blue sago layer on top. It is then dusted with desiccated coconut freshly grated by the sisters in-house.Â
Their Ubi Kayu ($2.20) also comes highly recommended. This tapioca kueh is mildly sweet and has a soft, mochi-like texture, making it perfect for any tea-time snack.Â
Aside from their kueh, Nyonya Bites also offers savoury mains on selected days, including Mee Siam ($3), Steamed Yam Cake ($2) and more. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to try these dishes during our visit, but be sure to try them out if they are available!
For more traditional Nyonya kueh to try, check out Kim Choo Kueh Chang, which has been selling Nyonya kueh since 1945. Alternatively, if you’re in the hawker centre, check out Cat In The Hat, which sells cafe-style bakes ranging from tarts, madeleines, financiers, and scones.
