You might have heard of the wildly viral Japanese canned cakes from Okashi Gaku, which took social media platforms by storm last year. Good news for cake-in-a-can fans: these desserts are now available at two new locations in Singapore, on the second floor of Bugis+ and the third level of Plaza Singapura!

For those unfamiliar with Okashi Gaku, they were founded by the owners of GAKU, a restaurant chain from Hokkaido, Japan, which is well-known for their parfaits and risotto. Their unique cake-in-a-can concept garnered much online buzz, sending Japan into a tizzy. With their immense popularity, Okashi Gaku expanded into Singapore last year, boasting a current total of five vending machines across the island.

Their most popular item is their Strawberry Shortcake Can ($11.80), which features fluffy chiffon cake layered with fresh whipped cream and Hokkaido strawberries. It also consists of a layer of strawberry jam within, adding some tanginess to balance the sweetness of the dessert.

Apart from their shortcake cans, Okashi Guwa also has Fuwa Cans, which directly translate to ‘fluffy’ in Japanese. These cans comprise an airy chiffon cake that’s layered with cream, fruit jelly, fruit puree, and fruit jam. You can try their Mango and Passionfruit ($9.80), consisting of a rich, fruity chiffon cake that’s topped with mango and passionfruit jelly for a sweet finish.

Don’t miss out on their Singapore-exclusive flavours too, which include Matcha ($8.80), Mango and Chocolate ($9.80), and Tiramisu ($8.80).

If you find the Shortcake Cans and Fuwa Cans too filling, the lighter Egg Pudding Can ($5.80) should be perfect for you. The egg pudding is made with fresh cream, vanilla beans, and vanilla paste for a rich, milky taste.

To enjoy the cakes, simply pull the tab on top just like any normal canned drink. Peel off the lid of the can and start digging in with the tall spoon provided!

All of Okashi Gaku’s 24-hour vending machines in Singapore accept cashless payment, such as NETS and payWave, so you don’t have to worry about having to carry cash on hand.

For more Japanese bakes and pastries, check out Catbake, a neko-themed cafe with cheesecakes, cat-shaped bakes and more. Alternatively, read our Plaza Singapura food guide for more food in Plaza Singapura.
