As the man behind the now-defunct Antoinette, curry rice stall Supercurry, and Pang’s Hakka Yong Tau, chef Pang Kok Keong has had quite the prolific career. And yet he is showing no signs of slowing down as he opens his second Pang’s Hakka Yong Tau, this time in Yishun.
Pang’s Hakka Yong Tau Foo is primarily known for its yong tau fu noodles, but a lot of the buzz around this Yishun outlet involves a new menu addition—Pang’s Hakka Thunder Tea Rice ($5.90).
This dish isn’t actually a “new” item in the Pang-verse, but rather a dish he sold online during the pandemic. Chef Pang has decided to bring this fan favourite to his latest stall.
Order this dish and you’ll get a bowl filled with plenty of nutritious and wholesome ingredients, including tofu, peanuts, ikan bilis, an assortment of vegetables, and brown rice.
These are, of course, best had with the accompanying bowl of thunder tea, AKA lei cha. Interestingly, Chef Pang’s rendition does not include the use of actual tea. There aren’t any overly bitter notes here—just the refreshing flavour of ingredients such as basil, mint, coriander and more.
If it’s your first time at Pang’s Hakka, though, you should definitely give the Signature Hakka YTF Noodle ($6.80) a shot.
This dish gets you a serving of garlic-infused chewy noodles topped with minced pork and scallions, accompanied by a separate bowl of yong tau foo soup. These noodles are incredibly delicious, especially with the house-made sambal belacan, and the yong tau fu soup and its variety of ingredients complement them well.
You can also have the yong tau fu in the Signature Curry Hakka YTF Noodle ($7.30), which boasts a fragrant curry broth and noodles that soak up all that piquant goodness.
