It seems like the popularity of sweet potato balls is here to stay for a while longer. Following our coverage of Aroy Thai and Golden Banana, we recently discovered S Fu Ren, a hidden gem hawker stall in Balestier selling handmade sweet potato balls and muah chee.
The sweet potato balls are made from scratch daily by an elderly couple. According to 8days, the auntie used to work in the canteen in Chung Cheng High School and Victoria School.
Each morning, the sweet potatoes are peeled, steamed, and mashed to a smooth consistency. Glutinous rice flour is added to the mix for a soft and chewy texture.
The dough is rolled out and shaped into balls, and then deep-fried in small batches till they’re golden brown.
The end product is a crispy golden ball with a soft and QQ interior that’s reminiscent of mochi. You get the natural sweetness of the sweet potato that isn’t jelak, as the recipe calls for no extra sugar. They’re absolutely addictive! A portion is priced at $3 for 10 balls.
Check out our TikTok video above for the full scoop.

S Fu Ren also sells handmade White Muah Chee and Black Muah Chee, priced at $2.50 or $3 for the larger portion. The former sees soft sticky muah chee coated in a generous amount of ground peanuts, while the latter features ground black sesame. Get the Mix Muay Chee ($4) plate for the best of both worlds!
