Serangoon Garden Bakery Review: Fresh Buns From $1.10 At This 40-Year-Old Bakery

Having opened in the 1970s, Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery is a familiar name to many living in Serangoon across generations. Many rave about how fragrant the breads are, considering their affordability, with prices starting from just $1.10 even in this economy. 

FYI: The cheapest item is the Cream Puff, which goes for $1.10.

It’s said that Serangoon Garden Bakery start their day as early as 2am and bake all the way until 7am. All breads are made from scratch, and hence require extra manpower to churn out big batches of bakes for the day.

But affordability and effort aside, is the bread here still good after all these years? That’s the question we hoped to answer when we recently visited the bakery.

Food at Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery

I began with their highly-raved Hamburger ($1.30) bun that many claim to be nostalgic as it comes with a slab of savoury luncheon meat within.

One thing that we liked here, which was consistent with all the other options, was the golden-brown bread that had this soft, almost pillowy texture. It’s really as old-school as it gets, and if you grew up eating this kind of bread, you’re going to love it here. The luncheon meat, meanwhile, did as good a job as luncheon meats can, but we really preferred the other fillings that we tried.

Continuing with another savoury bread, we went for their Curry Bun ($1.40), which was stuffed with curry and potato cubes.

The first flavour that hit us was a strong hint of curry powder, along with a slight kick of spice. The potato cubes were soft but not too mushy, and still had a bit of a bite to them. While the luncheon meat bun was remarkable for its bread, this option really stood out for its piquant, fragrant curry filling that’s difficult to resist. 

If the Curry Bun whetted our appetite, then the Prawn Sambal ($1.50) kicked it into overdrive. The hae bee hiam filling here was just so umami, and the nice spicy kick it had only intensified its flavours. Some may find it too salty, but if you’re all about intense flavours, this is likely to impress.

The Kaya Bun ($1.30) is another popular delight here at Serangoon Bakery & Confectionery. While we wished they were more generous with the filling, as you can see from the picture above, the house-made kaya was nevertheless creamy and fragrant, without being too sweet.

The staff recommended us to try the Cheese Ham ($1.30), which we found to be a decent rendition of the classic cheese-and-ham combo. The ham was fresh and nicely folded into the bun, such that one could enjoy a substantial slice of ham within a relatively small bun. The cheese, meanwhile, added a creamy finish to each bite.

Ambience at Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery

Situated within Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre, there are a plethora of hearty options that you can have alongside the fragrant and fluffy breads here. However, you may want to head down early, as there are many popular stores that see long queues daily. 

It is just a 10-minute bus ride away from Serangoon MRT Station, making this a convenient food stop for those living around the area.

We could definitely see ourselves coming back to Serangoon Garden Bakery & Confectionery for their wide variety of delicious bread. Considering that we spent just $6.80 for five bakes, the value-for-money aspect makes this very easy to recommend, too.
