Macaroni and cheese is one of those meals that you can’t really go wrong with. At The Big Cheese, you not only get delicious mac and cheese for under $11, but you also get to customise the ingredients to your liking!
The casual eatery is tucked away at Sunshine Plaza, which is within walking distance from Bencoolen MRT Station. Despite its relatively hidden location, I could see this spot as a popular lunch destination among the students schooling nearby.Â
Compared to most of the eateries in the CBD which easily set you back almost $20 per head, the prices here are much easier on the wallet. For example, their signature mac and cheese is priced at $9 for small and $11 for a regular portion. Choose from four varieties: All-American, Big Cheese, Mac & Grill, and Sriracha Chicken. They also have meat-free options: Four Cheese, Truffled Mushroom, and Spinach & Feta. This goes for $7 for small and $8.50 for regular.
If none of these flavours strike your fancy, opt for ‘Make-A-Mac’ ($6.50/$8)! You get to customise the entire bowl, including the pasta shape, the proteins, and greens you want to add, and a topping of your choice. Some options include truffle oil, dorito crumbs, bacon bits and more.Â
FYI, there are six different types of cheeses here: cheddar, mozzarella, and gouda are just some examples.
After your box of pasta is loaded with various toppings, it is then torched to achieve that perfect crust and melted cheese pull. This dish may be simple but it is lauded as warm, tasty, and hearty!
For more good eats in the area, read our SKOSH review, where we tried mains under $25 at this Japanese-inspired cafe. Alternatively, read our Bread Yard review for $8++ pasta and more.Â
