Kampong Bahru is a hotspot for many cafes and bakeries, such as Haengbok Cakeyo and Kream & Kensho. Joining the leagues is Three Point Two, a sister brand to the durian wholesaler Pang Zi Durian. This pink-and-blue cafe specialises in gelatos and durian desserts, with other sweet treats, savouries, and beverages available on their menu. With the dine-in restrictions relaxed, my sweet-toothed colleague and I headed down for some desserts after lunch.
It’s almost mandatory to order gelato on waffles at a gelato cafe, and we started our meal with the Buttermilk Waffle ($5.50), topped with double scoops ($7.50) of Lychee Rose, and Roasted Pistachio. As they are premium flavours, we had to top $1 for each.
Where I’ve had some gelatos with an icy finish, and some with a slight stickiness, the Lychee Rose gelato at Three Point Two was creamy throughout—a personal favourite of mine, along the consistency spectrum of gelatos. Â
Flavour-wise, the lychee was extremely intense, overpowering the rose. That’s not a problem with me as I’m not a big fan of the latter, and I found that the subtle floral notes of the rose were enhanced by the lightness of the lychee.
To me, the mark of a good gelato parlour is the quality of their pistachio gelatos. The Roasted Pistachio gelato here came speckled with pistachio bits, adding some texture to the creamy base. The nuttiness of the pistachios was very pronounced, resulting in a decadent scoop. However, I found it a touch sweet.
Their waffles were definitely better than average, laced with a light buttermilk fragrance, fluffy as a cloud within. The only thing missing was the crispy exterior.
The next sweet on our list was these bite-sized Earl Grey Puffs ($10.90 for six pieces), with a craquelin-topped choux encasing earl grey custard.
The craquelin was crumbly, and slightly buttery—a perfect contrast against the luscious earl grey custard within, which tasted surprisingly light, tinged with sharp, citrusy notes of bergamot.
As Three Point Two is helmed by a durian wholesaler, we had to try their D24 Pahang Highland Durian Mochi ($10 for four pieces). For those uninitiated to Pahang, it’s a region in Malaysia that’s dubbed the durian king, blessed with an abundance of durian farms, and quality harvests.
The mochi was immensely delicate and felt as though it might collapse with just a pinch of my fingers. While it was soft and chewy, I didn’t like its floury exterior. Meanwhile, the durian filling was forgettable. Don’t get me wrong—it was still rich, though more sweet than bitter, but I’ve definitely had better elsewhere.
To wash everything down, we ordered two drinks from their beverage selection: an Iced Mocha ($6.50) and Iced Matcha Latte ($6.50). I could barely discern any traces of chocolate in the Iced Mocha, and the coffee tasted a tad acidic. Meanwhile, I liked that the Iced Matcha Latte didn’t use any sweetener, but the earthy undertones of green tea were masked by the inordinate ratio of milk to matcha.
If you’re a sucker for pink-themed cafes such as Smile Dessert or A Beautiful Day, you’ll be pulled into the pink interiors of Three Point Two, which they paired with dark blue walls, wooden fixtures, and rounded edges.
Location-wise, Three Point Two takes less than 10 minutes to walk from Outram Park MRT Station, making it fairly accessible.
All in all, Three Point Two passes off as a decent pit stop to quell your sweet tooth, with good waffles and gelato, though I expected more from their durian desserts. Amidst the high competition at Kampong Bahru, I’m sure they can go a long way with improved recipes and better beverage selections.
For more cafes to dine at, check out Champion Bolo Bun, a three-storey cafe at Tanjong Pagar specialising in bolo buns. There’s also La Vie at Jalan Besar, for unique desserts such as lychee boba cake and Baileys tiramisu.
