Penang is home to an abundance of well-known dim sum spots, and a quick Google search is enough to leave you spoilt for choice. Yet one name consistently appears on nearly every list and the lips of both locals and tourists alike: Fu Er Dai.

Located near central George Town, the quaint eatery has been serving traditional dim sum for over a decade. Its longevity is evident in the over 5,000 Google reviews it has accumulated over the years, boasting an impressive 4.4-star average rating.

Diners can grab a seat at one of the many tables before heading to the display counter for an order sheet. Rows of steaming bamboo baskets stacked high immediately catch the eye, neatly organised into steamed items, fried selections, and non–dim sum dishes. 

Service runs like clockwork amid the bustling activity, with staff updating the order sheets each time an item is taken.

Some of their signature offerings include the Liu Sha Bao (RM9.4), which is generously filled with molten egg custard that flows out the moment it’s broken open, as well as their Char Shao Bao (RM3.4). The former comes in a basket of three, which works out to around S$1 per piece!

Other highlights include the Har Gow (RM9.4), packed with fresh, snappy prawns encased in a thin, chewy wrapper, and the Yam Puff (RM8.2), featuring a flaky exterior with a char siew filling.

For something different, their Bacon Roll (RM9.4) comes with a meatball wrapped in strips of bacon and coated with a sweet, caramelised glaze.

Classics such as Siew Mai (RM6.9) and Prawn Chee Cheong Fun (RM8.9) are also part of the savoury choices, while desserts, including their Egg Tart (RM3.8) and Soya Milk (RM3.5), provide a sweet finish.

With a wide selection of reasonably priced dishes, the eatery fills up quickly with diners, especially on weekends. Drivers can enjoy ample free parking in the large open-air lot, conveniently located beside the compound.
