New flavours at Bao Makers
We first tried Bao Makers last year and were floored by their unique and delicious flavours such as chilli crab, salmon mentaiko and salted egg chicken.
Bao Makers Review: Salmon Mentaiko Sushi, Beef Bowls And Fried Chilli Crab Bao
Unfortunately, their Outram Park location meant that regular makan sessions there were a tall order for us Easties. Thankfully, their new delivery and catering service is here to solve our bao cravings. What’s more, they’ve even introduced new flavours like ma la beef, pork belly and blackened chicken to tantalise your taste buds.
Given the wealth of bao options, the new Bao Box of 12 ($40+) is available for delivery to those who want a lil’ bit of everything. Packaged with a sleek white tray, the box has 12 compartments to hold the pillowy treasures. Best part of it all is that you can customise your options to include both the new range and classics like salted egg chicken.
The full list of flavours includes:
- Chilli Crab
- Salted Egg Chicken
- Salmon Mentaiko
- Blackened Chicken
- Ma La Beef
- Pork Belly
- Veggie
- Baked Ham
- Japanese Egg Mayo
Out of the three new flavours, the blackened chicken ($4.30++) impressed us the most with its bold flavour. Tucked between the steamed black sesame bun is a well-seasoned charcoal fried chicken that boasts a wonderfully crunchy skin. The biscuit-like exterior gels harmoniously with unctuous meat to bring about a satisfying mouthfeel.
The robust garlic mayo gives the bao depth, with its creaminess acting as a foil to the bao’s springiness.
If you’re expecting a lot of company, you might wanna spring for the Mini Bao Party ($15 per person, minimum 15 people) instead. It comes with two Bao Boxes, house salad, edamame, Mini Kecap Manis Chicken Rice Bowls, and four sets of Artisan Rolls.
Despite the “mini” in the name, the rice bowls are filling thanks to many morsels of soy-chicken packed in them. Taste-wise, the chicken has the right balance of sweetness and saltiness, with the fried skin acting as a good canvas to absorb the flavours.
You’ll also get to choose between three maki flavours to make up your four Artisan Rolls – Salmon Mentaiko, Prawn Avocado and Crispy. It goes without saying that you should grab at least one of each flavour to get your money’s worth. We recommend choosing another salmon mentaiko as your fourth roll ‘cause it’s simply amazing.
The roll is lathered with a copious amount of mentaiko sauce and then topped with juicy salmon roe, providing each bite with sweet and briny flavours.
So if you’re looking for a break from the usual bento boxes for your next function, Bao Makers might have the buns you want, hun. From now till 31 May 2019, you can even enjoy free delivery when you purchase at least three Bao Boxes. Just be sure to place your order by 1pm for a next day delivery.
