High tea in Singapore sometimes costs a fortune and then some, although there are wallet-friendly options priced under $35++ a person. Travel to Bali, however, and you could feast for the same price, as evidenced by Biku, a Balinese restaurant in Seminyak, which is popular for their Asian-inspired high tea sets.
The Asian High Tea here is priced at just IDR160K, which works out to approximately S$14.53, and is good for two to share. This makes it around S$7 a person! If you prefer, they also serve a traditional version, which is also just as affordably priced. Alongside your high tea set, you’d get to choose from a tea menu spanning more than 50 varieties from across China, India, and Indonesia!
Having high tea without scones should be illegal; at Biku, they’ve put an Asian spin on the pastry with Date Scones paired with Mango Jam, for a tropical burst of sweetness. You can also expect Salak Poached in Cinnamon and Star Anise, Vegetarian Lumpia with Dipping Sauce, Black Rice Pudding, Kue Mochi, and Dada Gulung, where pandan crepe skins are rolled around a filling of grated coconut with palm sugar.
On the savoury side of things, there are Samosa with Chutney, Curried Egg Sandwiches, and Ayam Sisit with Sambal Matah Tart too—ayam sisit is a Balinese dish of spicy, shredded chicken, while sambal matah is a fresh, or raw, sambal.
We couldn’t leave without trying Biku’s signature bake: Carrot Cake (IDR160K/S$3.63). This tall, moist cake is super nutty, and slathered with a cream cheese frosting that lends it sweetness. While dense, we also found it crumbly, without being too sweet. Plus, it’s gluten-free too!
Not only are they a restaurant and tea lounge, but Biku is also a homeware shop and bookstore, all of which are ensconced in a 150-year-old traditional Javanese house called a joglo. On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 1pm and 5pm, you might even get a tarot card reading done for you!
