Cafes that serve western food are aplenty, so we were intrigued when we heard of a quiet cafe at Telok Ayer that offers hearty Peranakan dishes. Located within the CBD, Chong Wen Ge Cafe doesn’t offer a large variety of mains, but each dish on the menu is of a lower price than what you would pay at a regular cafe.
Tucked next to a Chinese temple, Chong Wen Ge Cafe looks surprisingly English with its pastel blue pillars and glass panel doors – great for taking #OOTDs! The moment we stepped in, we were greeted by traditional Peranakan floor tiles and old-school furniture that transported us back to Singapore in the early 20th century.
I’m a big fan of curry, so the first thing we ordered was their signature Nonya Curry Chicken ($9.80). The curry was rich without being too jelak, and it came with their very own achar.
The sour achar complemented the spicy curry by gaving the entire dish a nice balance.
We also got a bowl of Nonya Laksa ($8.80) that came with huge prawns. It came in a large portion, and its smell made us want to tuck in ASAP. The taste of coconut milk was stronger than your usual bowl of laksa, but it was less spicy than we expected.
Of course, we had to end the meal on a sweet note, so we got a platter of Nonya Kuehs ($1.50 each) to share. For someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, I really enjoyed them as the sweetness of each kueh was just nice!
We were super full after our meal and spent some time taking pictures of the photogenic cafe. If you’re looking for an affordable and quiet spot to enjoy some old-school dishes, Chong Wen Ge Cafe is definitely the place for you.
