This Marine Parade Stall Has Cafe-Style Strawberry Matcha, Hojicha Latte And More

Cornershop has cafe-style drinks in Marine Parade

More hawker stalls are offering cafe-style drinks these days, with Generation Coffee and Daylight Coffee as good examples. Here’s another stall tucked away in the East to visit: Cornershop! They sell cafe-style drinks that are not as commonly seen at hawker centres, including the trendy strawberry matcha. The stall is housed at 50A Marine Terrace Market, which is a three-minute walk from Marine Terrace MRT Station.

Located right at the corner of the market, the hidden gem requires a fair bit of searching but trust us when we say it’s worth it. The menu is pretty extensive, with several variations of kopi, matcha, kombucha, and even craft beers!

On the matcha side of things, they have several options including the Dirty Matcha ($5.50), Matcha Yakult Shot ($3.50), and Strawberry Matcha ($6). Out of the lot, the Strawberry Matcha is a cult favourite as it hits the right spot—you get a great balance of the bittersweet matcha and the sweet strawberry puree. FYI: they use ceremonial grade matcha, one of the best types of matcha.

I was in awe of the stall owner’s dedication to honing her craft. She had all the matcha equipment nailed down to the tea: from the electric kettle that measured the water to just the right temperature, to the bamboo whisk and ceramic bowl. That’s how you know the matcha served here is legit!

If you’re more of a hojicha person, go for the Maple Hojicha instead, which is $4.50 for hot and $5 for iced. The hojicha boasted a nice roasted flavour, and the maple syrup lent a subtle sweetness.

They also do kopi drinks here: Kopi Tonic ($4), Kopi ($3), Kopi Latte ($2.50), and Iced Kopi Cold Brew (from $3). The Kopi Latte uses a traditional Nanyang kopi base, but swaps out the evaporated and condensed milk for fresh milk.

Here, the fresh milk goes through a round of steaming and frothing, just like how a latte is usually prepared. The result is a slightly stronger, more bitter-tasting coffee, so don’t expect it to be as sweet as a regular kopi.

Intrigued by the Kopi Tonic, we decided to give it a try. This drink is a refreshing blend of kopi cold brew and tonic water, finished off with a lemon slice for added zest—like a more fun rendition of kopi o kosong. They also have a Matcha Tonic ($5) version, which we recommend if you prefer matcha to coffee.

In related news, Playmade launched a new taro milk tea with handmade mochi for a limited time! Else, check out our guide to other unique kopi stalls in Singapore.
