Creamie Sippies: Popular Matcha Cafe Opens In Chinatown With SG’s First Matcha Mill

Creamie Sippies Keong Saik has a unique matcha mill

Matcha cafes may be a dime a dozen recently, with new ones opening all the time. However, no other place makes their matcha as fresh as at Creamie Sippies’ new outlet along Keong Saik Road, thanks to their use of Singapore’s first matcha mill. The machine is specially imported from Japan!

For the unfamiliar, matcha mills are traditional granite grinders that produce a much smoother and fluffier powder than modern machines—at the cost of being way slower. This labour-intensive, time-consuming process even imparts a subtle, roasted fragrance called “hika”, owing to the heat produced during grinding.

If you ask me, nothing beats having matcha that’s ground fresh each day. I’m told that the mill only churns out 30 to 40 grams of matcha powder each hour, but the result is a whisked matcha that has a smooth, luxurious texture.

You can watch the grinding process live at the new outlet if you’re lucky; no other matcha cafe provides you with this opportunity to see your drink come alive with your very eyes.

The flagship store opens with new, outlet-exclusive cloud drinks: we tried their Earl Grey Matcha Cloud ($9.90) and the Butterfly Pea Coconut Cloud ($8.90), both fundamentally different offerings. We also sampled their most popular matcha and coffee creations.

The Earl Grey Matcha Cloud featured a thick matcha foam atop an Earl Grey latte. While we appreciated the combination of textures in this drink, we felt that the matcha and Earl Grey, both strong and sharp flavours, were at odds with each other.

The Butterfly Pea Coconut Cloud was a direct contrast: a wispy, almost-too-shy concoction of coconut water and butterfly pea foam. Unlike every other matcha or coffee drink here that hits you in the face, this one toys with your senses; playfully thin and light, with each sip beckoning you to explore its layered textures and subtle flavours.

The viral Banana Pudding Matcha Latte ($9.90) was an absolute banger. A huge dollop of banana pudding is heaped onto the matcha latte, creating a visually impactful beverage.

The thick, decadent pudding was a heavenly affair, rich with large banana slices and a generous dose of Biscoff crumbles. Pair that together with the rich, bittersweet umami of the matcha latte, and you have a delicious treat.

Almost a mandatory offering at matcha cafes nowadays, the Strawberry Matcha Latte ($8.90) here had a thick layer of strawberry compote, complete with sizable chunks of fresh strawberries. The thick puree mixed well into the matcha latte, producing a smooth and sweet drink.

We also tried the Banana Bread Latte ($8.90), a combination of espresso with milk, banana foam, banana syrup, and a hint of nutmeg. While the coffee here packed a punch and was enjoyably strong and bitter, we felt that the banana flavour took a backseat.

The Keong Saik outlet also serves an array of desserts. For a light bite, go for the Banana Bread Cake ($7.90), which is rich but rather dense. If you can’t get enough of their Banana Pudding, you can have a standalone portion for $7.90

Creamie Sippies’ sparkling new location is a six-minute walk from Maxwell MRT Station, and a nine-minute walk from Outram Park MRT Station
