Delato is a new cafe in Tampines with gelato and mochi waffles

If you live near Tampines Street 43, you may have walked past delato, the newest kid on the block. The cosy dessert cafe, which officially opened on 13 August, specialises in handcrafted gelato in a small array of flavours.

The Original Waffles ($6) are said to be thick and crispy on the outside, yet light and fluffy inside. Pair them with your choice of gelato, priced at $4.20 per scoop for regular flavours, and $5 for premium flavours.

The cafe offers Sicilian-style gelato, which omits egg yolks and uses cornstarch as a thickening agent instead. Here, you can look forward to 12 different gelato flavours available daily. Highlights include Maple Walnut Pie, Cereal Milk Chocolate Swirls, Mango Basil, and a locally inspired Kopi Toast flavour.

Those who love mochi waffles should also also try delato’s rendition. Their Matcha Mochi Waffle ($7) is said to be a hit; it comprises a slightly crispy waffle complemented with a chewy mochi middle and boasts fragrant green tea notes. Otherwise, go for the Duo Waffle ($7.50): half Original and half Matcha Mochi.

The nearest train station is Tampines East MRT Station, which is a short bus ride away. Despite its rather ulu location, we foresee this cafe getting crowded during peak hours, especially since they open till 1am on Friday and Saturday nights! There aren’t many seats either, so be prepared to wait for a table if you’re here on a weekend.
