This New Food Court Has Retro 80s Interiors And Ice Ball Desserts In City Square Mall

Food Republic in City Square Mall has retro interiors from the 1980s

If you’re looking for a casual dining spot to bring your family and friends, why not visit the newly renovated Food Republic at City Square Mall? The food court has just reopened its doors two weeks ago, but has already drawn massive crowds to its premises.

Inspired by street hawkers back in the 1970s and 1980s, this food court has several photo spots and fixtures such as bicycles, specially designed murals, and even flyers to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Convex mirrors and roadside fences also don the corners of the food court, seemingly resembling a carpark.

Food Republic is home to 12 food stalls, all of which embrace the appearance of olden-day food carts or street vendors. Stalls include Formosa Delights Handmade Noodles, Thye Hong Hokkien Mee, and HJH Maimunah Mini, to name a few.

One of the must-try items from HJH Mainunah Mini is this Tahu Telur ($8.50). This dish consists of deep-fried tofu and egg, drenched in a house-made spicy kecap manis sauce before being topped with a generous serving of fried peanuts, sliced carrots, and cucumbers.

Michelin Bib Gourmand winner Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodles is also among the line-up. Here, they offer a variety of choices such as Laksa ($7.80) and the popular Folk’s Favourite ($9.20). The latter is served with noodles and a generous portion of minced meat, pork lard, and crispy wanton skin, alongside a bowl of their famous fishball soup. Unlike other fishball noodle stalls, this one adds a runny onsen egg for a nice finish to the dish.

No meal is complete without dessert, and Food Republic does not disappoint. In line with the 80s theme, the food court also serves Ice Ball ($2), a simple dessert popular back then.

For drinks, consider their best-selling Teh Slush ($2.90) or the Sea Salt Caramel Avo Slush ($4.50) for a refreshing break from Singapore’s heat. If not, they also have your usual hawker favourites!
