Frosted by Fang bakery opens in MacPherson
Home-based businesses in Singapore are a dime a dozen, but not all of them experience the same success as Frosted by Fang. The home-based bakery, run by self-taught baker Su Fang, recently opened their first brick-and-mortar store right in the MacPherson heartlands.
Located under an HDB block along Upper Aljunied Lane, the hidden bakery offers a lineup of goodies that are baked fresh on-site each morning. You can drop by and da bao what’s available, or pop in to collect your pre-order. The menu changes each month and the items are limited, so it’s best to DM them to reserve in advance if anything catches your eye.
I got a box of five treats, namely the Sour Cherry Oatmeal Crumble ($5), Dark Chocolate Lavender Brownie ($5.50), Coconut, Yuzu Curd & Lychee Mochi Donut ($4), Browned Butter Miso Chocolate Chip Cookie ($3.50), and Classic Carrot Walnut Cake ($6.50).
Out of all the items, my favourite was the mochi doughnut, a palm-sized treat that’s perfect for any time of the day.
You get a light and chewy baked doughnut that’s stuffed with tangy yuzu curd and juicy lychee bits. There’s also a faint hint of coconutty creaminess from the doughnut batter itself.
The carrot cake was a close second. Served as a big cupcake, this cinnamon-spiked treat is topped with a rich, silky cream cheese frosting.
The carrot cake is extremely fluffy, with a perfectly tender crumb that’s studded with bits of crunchy walnuts.
Then there’s also the Sour Cherry Oatmeal Crumble, a hefty, layered bar finished with a crunchy streusel-like topping. Loaded with oats and a tangy cherry jam, this bar is the ideal brekkie with a cup of joe.
Those with a sweet tooth can consider the Dark Chocolate Lavender Brownie, a rather unconventional take on the classic brownie. This slab of fudgy goodness was thick and dense, with rich chocolatey notes uplifted by the fragrant aroma of lavender.
Otherwise, the sweet-savoury cookie is another excellent pick if you’re up for something indulgent. It boasts strong umami notes from the browned butter and miso, rounding out the sweetness from the chocolate chips.
At the moment, Su Fang is the sole baker who churns out the treats each day, while her mother helps with the operations. The duo is planning to roll out a coffee menu sometime soon, so you can enjoy a cuppa with a fresh bake in hand!
Another homegrown bakery to check out is Elijah Pies, which has recently opened a pretty cafe in the CBD with IG-worthy pies and drinks. There’s also The Homme Baker for unique cheese-shaped cakes in the new Margaret Market.
