This New Korean Restaurant Has Traditional Korean Stone Pot Rice In Telok Ayer

Gamtan Korean Cuisine is a new Korean restaurant in Telok Ayer

Gamtan Korean Cuisine, a newly opened Korean restaurant in the CBD, is one of the few spots in Singapore where you can enjoy sotbap. In case you didn’t know, sotbap is a traditional Korean pot rice widely enjoyed by Korean natives. If you enjoy sotbap as much as we do, here’s good news: the new restaurant is located within spitting distance of Telok Ayer MRT Station.

In early 2024, our team got to try Sagye in Tanjong Pagar, another sotbap specialty restaurant that created quite a buzz on social media platforms. Besides Sagye, more Korean restaurants offering sotbap have sprouted in Singapore, which goes to show the growing popularity of this traditional dish.

There’s a step-by-step method to follow when tackling your sotbap. Firstly, mix your sotbap and sauce thoroughly in your pot. After you’re done with your meal, pour in the barley tea on the side. This tastes best when eaten together with the nurungji, AKA scorched rice, stuck at the bottom of the pot.

There are several types of sotbap here: Steak ($34.80++), Pork ($26.80++), Eel ($28.80++), Domi AKA Sea Bream ($32.80++), Abalone ($28.80++), and Mushroom ($23.80++). Based on some online reviews, their most popular options are the Steak and the Eel sotbap. FYI, their sotbap menu is available during lunch hours from 11:30am to 3pm.

The Steak sotbap features generous amounts of beef, which is said to be perfectly tender and well-seasoned. The rice here is buttery and slightly smoky, complementing well with all the delicious ingredients atop the warm bed of rice. These ingredients include sesame seeds, egg yolk, and spring onions, which provide a nice balance of textures and flavours.

Although the meal is pretty substantial on its own, there are sides such as Truffle Gamjajun ($12.80++) and Yurinji ($14.80++) perfect for sharing too! The former is a potato pancake with a hint of truffle, while the latter is a sweet-tangy fried chicken.
