As someone who absolutely adores fish soup but is ambivalent towards yong tau foo, Good Stuff! seemed like the ideal yong tau foo (YTF) stall for me. Located in a food court in Lorong Chuan, the stall offers handmade yong tau foo with a twist. Instead of the clear and light-tasting broth based on ikan bilis and soybeans, the hawker stall creates its flavourful soup using fish bones, making it essentially YTF with fish soup.
That unique concept, as well as the handmade label, enticed us to drop by and try the fare for ourselves.
If you’re going in a group or the family, your best bet is to order the Family Delight Set ($26.90), and that is exactly what we ordered. This set comes with 24 fried yong tau foo pieces and a sizeable bowl of fish soup.
We’ll start with the fish soup, as that’s one of the bigger draws of the stall. The soup did not disappoint, as I found myself enjoying the savoury, umami goodness of the fish broth, as well as its milky consistency. The generous amounts of mani cai in the soup imparted a pleasant sweetness as well.
After trying all the different varieties present in this 24-piece YTF set, I can safely say that these house-made ingredients were mostly high quality and delectable. If I had to pick favourites, I’d say the piece I enjoyed the most was the hand-stuffed tau kwa. Slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, this tau kwa also had a lovely fish paste filling that gave the whole an umami kick.
Other pieces I enjoyed included the crunchy lotus roots, the chunky and crispy youtiao, the fried dumplings that had a moreish meat filling, and the fresh fishcakes. You can dip these in either the sweet sauce or the piquant Thai chilli sauce—both work great with the YTF pieces.
We decided to get a bowl of Hakka Noodles ($2) to complement the YTF, and found ourselves thoroughly impressed with it.
The springy, chewy noodles had an amazing texture, and they managed to remain so even after some time had passed. The wonderfully piquant sambal chilli was also a delight to the senses, and the spicy kick that followed each bite was just addictive.
We also tried the Curry Chee Cheong Fun ($3.90) because we felt it was an interesting dish to have on the menu. Honestly, this felt more like a novelty item than anything, as the chee cheong fun wasn’t good texturally—too rubbery for my liking—and the curry wasn’t particularly aromatic or flavourful. Unless you really want another side, I’d say give this side a miss.
Good Stuff! is located in Foodies’ Clan, a Lorong Chuan food court that’s home to a decent range of stalls. It’s also quite spacious and well-furnished—we had no complaints about the space itself.
The food court is a seven-minute walk from Lorong Chuan MRT Station.
Good Stuff! really has the good stuff. We were impressed by their excellent yong tau fu and fish soup combination, and found ourselves loving their rendition of Hakka noodles, too. This is an underrated YTF stall that any fan of the dish should check out.
