Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery has handmade kueh in Bedok
In 1968, a small home-based operation known as Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery began churning out a wide selection of handmade nyonya kuehs. Today, it is one of the best-known kueh institutions in the country, with many patrons dropping by the Bedok North shop to have a taste of its traditional treats.
Lek Lim is perhaps chiefly known for its Ang Ku Kueh ($0.95), everyone’s favourite red tortoise-shaped snack. With its chewy skin and fragrant peanut filling, this beautifully crafted kueh is an absolute delight to eat.
If peanut isn’t your favourite filling, then one of these kuehs might do the trick: there’s the white Rice Kueh ($1.60), the purple Yam Kueh ($1.25), and the red Bean Kueh ($0.95).
The Soon Kueh ($1.60) is another popular treat that Lek Lim offers. This classic Nyonya kueh has the chewy goodness of the previously mentioned snacks, but with a savoury filling consisting of turnip, dried shrimps, bamboo shoots, and fried shallots.
For those with a sweeter tooth, Lek Lim has a few snacks that will satisfy you. There’s the buttery and sweet Kueh Lapis ($1.10), with its rainbow-coloured and layered construction, and the Ondeh Gula Melaka ($0.80), which is filled with gula melaka and coated with grated coconut.
