We Tried Mr & Mrs Mohgan’s Super Crispy Roti Prata To See If It Lives Up To The Hype

Mr & Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata is a famous Joo Chiat stall

It’s been a while since I last sank my teeth into a good piece of roti prata in Singapore. In fact, I cannot even remember the last prata that left a lasting impression on me. Having long subscribed to the controversial school of thought that there isn’t much to differentiate one prata from another, my perspective completely changed after trying Mr & Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata.

Calling myself a foodie felt disingenuous when I hadn’t even tasted arguably one of the most popular prata hotspots in the country. So, I made the long trip down to Tin Yeang Restaurant, a coffee shop along Joo Chiat Road, on an early weekday morning. The stall’s storied history dates back to 2006, when it was originally known as Mr Mohgan’s Super Crispy Roti Prata at Crane Road. It has since amassed over 1,600 Google reviews with a 4.3-star rating.

Although the store has revised its prices over the years, its offerings remain relatively affordable. A piece of Plain Prata starts at $1.50, while popular favourites like Egg Prata ($2) and Cheese Prata ($2.50) remain wallet-friendly. It was also nice to see a menu clearly catered towards prata, with only two exceptions—Sardine Murtabak ($8) and Mutton Murtabak ($9)—a telltale sign that prata is truly their forte.

A store’s plain prata is always the true litmus test, so that’s exactly where we began our morning. Though the prata were slightly smaller than others, its flaky layers with a light browning around the edges stood out.

But did it taste as good as it looked? The answer was an absolute yes. Each piece was made to order, allowing the natural scent of fresh dough to shine through. The result was a perfectly crisp exterior paired with a soft, fluffy interior that could be pulled apart effortlessly. Unlike many prata that go too far with crispiness and become biscuit-like, this one maintained a consistent balance between a doughy core and a crackling bite.

Having already tasted how outstanding their prata was on its own, I was excited to move on to the Egg Cheese ($3.30) variation. Breaking into it revealed a generous layer of egg and an equally hearty portion of cheese, both combining for a rich and indulgent flavour. A light char on the underbelly of the prata lent a hint of smokiness with each bite.

My favourite item was their Coin Prata ($5.50), which came in six coiled pieces of dough. That same well-balanced texture was once again present, now with a light buttery feel and complete with a sweet touch. But perhaps the biggest plus of all their prata offerings was that they weren’t overly oily, making them addictive without that overly cloying feeling.

With pratas of such quality, the only way to elevate them is to pair them with an excellent curry. And that’s exactly what Mr and Mr Mohgan delivered with their Fish and Mutton Curry. This was not your typical watered-down and starchy gravy, but rather a thick, punchy curry with real depth of flavour, topped with a giant piece of potato. I particularly liked the tinge of sourness in the fish curry, which added a different dimension to the prata.

Ambience at Mr and Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata

Mr and Mrs Mohgan is nestled in a roadside coffee shop along one of my favourite streets in the country: Joo Chiat Road. The eatery’s old-school, nostalgic vibes add to the overall dining experience, and the coffee shop is kept very clean. That said, seating is limited, and it can get crowded during peak hours.

Mr and Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata—Eatbook review

While other popular spots like Springleaf Prata experiment with new ways to innovate the dish, I believe the key to winning any prata lover’s heart lies in its classic version. The long queues of both tourists and locals alike reflect the demand for its consistently top-notch prata, but rest assured that the trip far East is completely worthwhile. Although it is heartbreaking that half its namesake passed away in 2022, it is reassuring to see his family carrying on his legacy.
