Hamburg steaks seem to be back in vogue right here in Singapore, with the viral Kichi Kichi Omurice collaborating with Tsukimi Hamburg just recently, and Rice Meat Up also opening in Bugis. The latest to join the fray is Niku Niku Oh Kome, a Japanese-owned Chinese brand that serves up—you guessed it—hamburg on rice at the newly opened Weave mall at Resorts World Sentosa.

The Viral Kichi Kichi Omurice Is Now In Singapore At Tsukimi Hamburg—Here’s Our Take On It

Niku Niku Oh Kome officially opens on 7 August, the brand’s 47th store and its first in Singapore, after successful expansions into Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Indonesia. A quick search of 肉肉大米 (ròu ròu dà mǐ), as it’s called in Chinese, on Rednote shows the brand’s popularity in Mainland China, where it supposedly attracts long queues daily.

Food at Niku Niku Oh Kome

Before we get into the dishes at Niku Niku Oh Kome, there’s a little bit to run through about the elements that go into what you’re served.

There’s the rice, a blend of Japonica and Japanese, which arrives at the restaurant unpolished, and is milled every day so that the grains retain more of their nutritional content—or so it’s claimed.

Plus, the rice is said to be cooked with specially treated, ultra-soft water that makes for an extra fluffy and shiny finish.

Then, there’s the beef. Like the rice miller, which they’ve placed outside the restaurant so you see it before even entering, the beef room is glass-enclosed. This allows both passers-by and diners to watch the beef being ground and patties made.

Now, on to the food. The menu is very straightforward: you’re getting beef patties with free-flow rice, miso soup, and broccoli, as well as an egg of your choice—a raw pasteurised egg yolk in house-made teriyaki sauce, or an onsen egg in the same sauce.

Pick from 2 Original Steak ($16.80++) or 3 Original Steak ($18.80++); each beef patty weighs in at 95g, and while it’s not 100% Wagyu, there is Wagyu in it, and the beef is aged Japanese-style.

Colour me surprised, but regardless of how long our patties had sat on the hotplates while we completed shooting them, they still retained a juicy, tender finish—although the outsides, of course, got a little burnt, so we’d advise against letting them stay too long on the cooktop.

I’d recommend starting with the Original, and trying bites of it with the eight different dipping sauces that can be found on the table, including wholegrain Mustard, Korean Chilli Sauce, Japanese Wasabi Salted-Malt, and Barbecue Sauce.

Call me basic, but I enjoyed the beef best with the Pepper Salt mix. Both my dining companion and I enjoyed the Aurora Sauce, which is a pink, tomato-mayonnaise blend that’s creamy with a smidgen of tanginess, and Onion Sauce. There’s also Spice Mum Chilli Sauce, a shrimp paste-based chilli dip that goes extra well with the broccoli, IMO.

Another way you can choose to have your beef patty is to place it on your bowl of rice, dollop the marinated raw egg yolk on top, and have it all together. I’d say it’s a luck-based situation, but if your egg yolk happened to have been sitting in the teriyaki sauce for a while, you’d be enjoying a slightly confit yolk that adds that extra, luxe touch to the beef and rice.

The second way to have your beef patty is as a Cheese Steak, available as an add-on ($8.80++) to any main, or as part of the 1 Original+1 Cheese Steak ($18.80++) set. Other variations include 2 Original+1 Cheese Steak ($20.80++), or 2 Cheese Steak ($20.80++).

However many patties you may choose to order, they’re served one by one, grilled a la minute to 30% doneness at the central grill, then delivered to your personal hotplate where you can let it continue cooking to your preferred doneness. Each Cheese Steak sees a slice of cheddar melted on, before fresh Grana Padano is grated to finish at your seat.

Pro tip: let the Grana Padano melt and crisp up on your hotplate, resulting in a cheese skirt for bonus flavour.

The last option on the very concise menu is a seasonal Avocado Steak, which is served in a little dish, topped with tartar sauce and slices of buttery avocado. Their house-made teriyaki sauce is poured over at service, allowing the whole concoction to meld together into a creamy, sweet-savoury treat that my dining companion especially enjoyed with the juicy beef patty.

If you can’t make up your mind, get the set of 1 Original+1 Cheese+1 Avocado ($22.80++), so you get a taste of everything that Niku Niku Oh Kome has to offer. Additional orders of the Onsen Egg and Pasteurised Raw Egg are priced at $2++.

Do note that the Avocado Steak is only on the menu till the end of September, after which it will be replaced by the next seasonal item. Previous editions included ones topped with creamy mushrooms, uni, crabmeat, yuzu, and even black truffle—so keep your eyes on their Instagram page for the next update.

Ambience at Niku Niku OhKome

NIKU-NIKU-OH-KOME-RWS-ambience

You can look forward to a convivial, casual dining atmosphere at Niku Niku Oh Kome, with two central cooking stations encircled by 4o counter seats. I appreciated that each barstool came with a base where you can put your bags, and that there was a footrest under the counter, too. However, you might want to take note that because of this, the dining experience might be considered less child-friendly, especially if your child is unable to sit independently on a barstool.

Service is brisk and efficient, and you’ll frequently get asked if you want extra top-ups of broccoli, soup and rice. On our visit, the restaurant wasn’t at full service, so we were unable to determine if their ventilation system is strong enough to combat the fumes from the grilling meat.

Niku Niku Oh Kome is situated right in between CHAGEE tea and Standard Bread, and behind the newly opened Pierre Herme at Weave. From Harbourfront MRT Station, take the Sentosa Express monorail to Resorts World Station, and walk down the passage from The Coach Coffee Shop.

Niku Niku Oh Kome – Eatbook review

Even after service charge and GST, the basic set rings in the till at sub-$20—with as much rice, miso soup, and broccoli as you can eat, this is a pretty good deal for a Sentosa-based eatery. Although some might gripe that there’s essentially only one item on the menu, I find that the variety of sauces and condiments, as well as the seasonal edition, helps to shake things up a little.

I wouldn’t make a trip all the way to Sentosa to dine here, but you can be sure that Niku Niku Oh Kome would be a top contender, apart from Din Tai Fung, should I find myself there and wanting a quick, hearty meal.
