8 Ondeh-Ondeh Desserts For The Ultimate Coconut And Gula Melaka Treat

22nd October 2019

Ondeh-Ondeh desserts in Singapore

The traditional Onde-onde (Ondeh-ondeh) is an explosion of flavours and textures. Its chewy exterior is almost like a giant bubble tea โ€œbubbleโ€ from the glutinous rice flour, while the inside contains a warm, sugary caramel liquid of gula melaka. Thereโ€™s also a hint of nuttiness and freshness from the cool coconut shavings outside. Now, that is just the traditional experience. Singaporeans love for ondeh-ondeh knows no bounds, and many talented bakers have done a modern take on the local desserts, bringing a wave of ondeh-ondeh desserts!

1. Moosh

Ondeh Ondeh Dessert Moosh-Ondeh-Ondeh-Soft-Serve

Located along hipster Haji lane, Moosh is a Halal-certified soft-serve bar. Their ice-cream comes with innovative toppings that mesh well together and will cool you down in Singapore’s ever-increasing heat.ย

The Ondeh-Ondeh Soft Serve ($4.50 for regular, $6 for large) is gula melaka flavoured and has a slight saltiness to it. This perfectly balances out the sweetness of the soft serve. It is capped off with a pandan-flavoured drizzle thatโ€™s not too overpowering as well as roasted coconut shavings, which gives a bit of nuttiness.

2. Antoinette ย

Ondeh Ondeh Dessert - Antoinette

Antoinette never fails to deliver when it comes to their desserts. Case in point: their new Ondeh-Ondeh Kaya Toast ($6++). Served on top of house-made ciabatta is a generous layer of pandan kaya and a thick rectangle of French butter. This is all finished off with lashings of gula melaka syrup and coconut flakes. We would gladly have this sweet toast every day for breakfast!

Pair this dessert with one of their many lighter savoury bites, such as the Schiacciata (S$18++), a traditional flatbread that is stuffed with camembert and pecorino cheese, as well as a generous amount of truffle for a full brunch with your loved one.ย

Get your hands on Fluff Bakeryโ€™s famous Ondeh-Ondeh Cupcakes Cake. These pandan cupcakes are super airy and moist, and crowning it is a smooth light buttercream that goes well with the gula melaka bits that are injected in the middle. When you are there, you might also want to take home a bag of their freshly house-made doughnuts which comes in a variety of flavours.ย

Sinpopo is famed for bringing old-school Singapore flavours to life with a modern twist, and their Ondeh-Ondeh Cake ($8++ for a slice, 48++ for six-inch cake) is a testament of ther success. I like that this cake really tastes like traditional ondeh-ondeh, as there are morsels of crushed gula melaka hidden throughout the cake, giving a burst of treacly flavour. The icing on the cake, literally, are light coconut cream and coconut flakes, adding a burst of sweet freshness. Pair your cake with their tasty Sinpopo Teh Tarik Special ($5++) for the complete tea-time treat.

Local goes โ€œaye carambaโ€ with Churro Factoryโ€™sย  Ondeh-Ondeh Churros ($3 for five churros). The traditional Spanish churro is a fried-dough pastry made mainly of butter, eggs, flour, and sugar. The creators at Churros Factory shake things up by using a pandan-flavoured dough, gula melaka sugar syrup and a sprinkle of desiccated coconut.ย

Helmed by a pair of Indonesian sisters who use traditional kueh recipes passed down through generations, Makan House by Ollellaโ€™s desserts are not your typical local fare. Indonesian desserts tend to be less sweet and have more spices added, so dishes such as the Ondeh-Ondeh Eclair ($7) are great for those who canโ€™t take overly sweet food. The elongated choux pastry is light with a chewy base. Inside, youโ€™ll find aromatic pandan flavoured custard, rich gula melaka glaze, and a generous topping of coconut shavings.

Casuarina Curryโ€™s Ondeh-Ondeh Prata ($4.90) is an unusual take on the traditional ondeh-ondeh. A crispy prata base forms the shell of this dessert. I like how it stays crispy despite housing loads of ingredients such as ice-cream and pandan jellies. For a stronger burst of sweetness, heap the dish with the accompanying gula melaka!
