Pull Tab Coffee: Popular Chinese Chain Opens In SG With Aerofoam Coffee And Thick Butter Kaya Toast

Pull Tab Coffee opens in Buona Vista with famous aerofoam coffee

If you were hooked on making your own Dalgona coffee during the pandemic, let me introduce you to its close relative, Aerofoam coffee! This unique caffeinated beverage can be found at the newly opened Pull Tab Coffee, located at The Metropolis in Buona Vista.

The beverage chain, which is said to have over 400 stores in China, is known for their specialty Aerofoam coffee. This is essentially freeze-dried coffee that is hand-whipped into a layer of cloud-like foam, and is crowned on top of the drink.

Drinks aside, they also have a selection of kaya toasts with extra-thick slabs of butter in them.

We started with the Iced Classic Aerofoam Coffee, which is priced at $5.80+ for medium and $6.80+ for large. We were told to pop open the lid and take a sip of the coffee foam first, and thereafter, give everything a good stir before drinking again.

We found that the coffee foam was a bit too strong and bitter-tasting on its own, but was much more enjoyable when mixed with the milk. The aerated foam also lent the drink an additional creaminess, usually not present in regular lattes. This drink was not as cloyingly sweet as most of the other Dalgona coffees out there, which I appreciated.

Next, we had the Iced Banana Aerofoam Coffee ($7.80+). The milk was laced with banana-flavoured syrup, giving it a pretty prominent banana flavour. This was then topped with the same coffee foam. We were also looking forward to trying their highly raved Osmanthus Oolong Tea Aerofoam Coffee ($5.80+), but unfortunately, they were sold out for the day.

Other popular drinks include the Iced Orange Americano ($5.80+) and the lesser-seen Matcha Guava ($6.80+). We gave the latter a go as we’ve never seen the guava juice-matcha pairing before. It was fruity and refreshing, with a slight grassy bitterness from the matcha.

But what impressed us the most was the Kaya Butter Toast ($2.80+). Sandwiched between two slices of thin, lightly toasted bread was sweet kaya jam and chunky slabs of unsalted butter. We’ve never seen butter slices so thick in our kaya toast, so we savoured each bite. Some people might find the amount of butter used to be too much, but we enjoyed the richness it added to the crispy toast.

There’s also the Chocolate Kaya Butter Toast ($3.80+), which has a chocolate-hazelnut filling similar to Nutella, paired with the same kaya.  While there wasn’t a strong coconut taste in this kaya, we enjoyed the sweet-salty pairing nevertheless.

In other news, check out the Hiap Joo Bakery vending machine at Senja Hawker Centre, to get your fix on their famous banana cakes. For more good eats in Buona Vista, check out The Bagel Bunch for affordable smoked salmon bagel sandwiches and more!
