As a sucker for pastries and desserts, my eyes immediately lit up when I learned that RUXU, a China-based bakery with outlets in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, recently opened its first overseas branch on Singapore shores at Funan Mall.
While many may be tired of hearing about Chinese F&B brands popping up across Singapore, RUXU’s focus on baked confections felt refreshingly different and well worth the visit, having already garnered rave reviews from locals in China.
With nearly 30 varieties of bread and an array of dessert bowls, the bakery’s selection was impressive. Although their shaved ice milk options were unavailable during my morning visit, my colleague and I were still spoiled for choice. We also understood that all of their bakes are freshly prepared daily in small batches to ensure optimal quality.
We couldn’t pass up on the Caramel Custard Tart ($2.80), and were pleased to learn about the buy-four-for-three deal, which brought the price down to a very affordable $2.10 per tart. For that price point, I got easily one of the best egg tarts I’ve tried in the country.
The glistening tart featured a beautifully caramelised top and a hand-rolled puff pastry exterior that was not overly flaky. From the first mouthful, we were greeted with a rich, eggy milk custard that was luxuriously soft. This was complemented by a subtly infused homemade caramel sauce, whose gentle sweetness enhanced its flavours without overpowering them—unlike other caramel tarts we’ve tried.
Their Butter-Fried “Saa Jung” Twist ($2.80) was just as visually appealing, featuring a sugar-coated bun with a generous slab of butter peeking out. The bun was soft and fluffy, with a satisfying crunch from the sugar layer. While the butter flavour was a little mild and could have been bolder, we appreciated how it helped maintain the sweet-and-salty harmony.
One of my top picks was their Cacao Rich Dark Chocolate Ganache Bun ($3.50). Similarly, the buns carried a delicate touch—a testament to the care poured into each pastry. We were captivated by the precise layer of ganache chocolate nestled in the bun’s open centre, offering smooth cocoa notes and topped with pistachios that delighted our senses.
While the Red Bean Mochi & Soy Milk Lava Bun ($3.50) may look unassuming, it proves that appearances can be deceiving. Prepare to get your hands dirty for this one, as it is cloaked with a generous dusting of soybean flour. The combination of molten soybean cream and low-sugar red bean filling that flowed out delightfully was surprisingly not too sweet and very easy to enjoy.
Sadly, the dessert bowls did not offer much to shout about. Their Mochi & Black Sesame Paste Coconut Ice Cream Scoop ($6.80) offered a deep, nutty flavour complemented by the ice cream. The mochi leaned towards a thick, gooey consistency rather than the chewy, stretchy pull that fans of Japanese mochi might be familiar with.
The Fresh Milk Ultimate Mix ($8.90+) was packed with ingredients, including grass jelly, taro balls, lotus seeds, and peach gum jelly, all topped with fresh milk. Aside from its generous portion, it tasted rather ordinary, but it could be a convenient option for sharing among more diners.
Do note that a 10% service charge will apply to dine-in orders.
Located on the ground floor of Funan, the outlet is tucked away near one of the mall’s side entrances, making it easy to spot. Designed as both a bakery and cafe, the space exudes a homely charm. The cosy dining area is softly illuminated by mellow lights, while glass display cases positioned near the exterior showcase an enticing array of baked goods, offering a tempting visual treat.
The eatery is a 4-minute walk from City Hall MRT Station.
Many dessert shops leave us scrambling for water due to their overly sweet offerings, but that was certainly not the case here. A common theme running through their products was a thoughtful balance of flavours, allowing each element of the dish to shine without overwhelming the palate. Coupled with the evident quality of their desserts and affordable price points, this makes the RUXU a place dessert lovers should definitely check out.
