Sin Chew Serves Some Of The Best Satay Bee Hoon In SG—Here’s Our Honest Review

Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon is at Bukit Timah Food Centre

Satay bee hoon isn’t the most common dish around, and even after living in Singapore for so long, it wasn’t something I had come across as much as other local dishes. At least, not until I scoured the internet looking for new hawker food to try. As a fan of both satay and bee hoon, and after hearing much about Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon from friends who religiously visit it, I knew I had to check it out for myself. I was surprised by the long queue at a stall that only serves two dishes, but I decided to withhold judgment until I actually tried the food.

Food at Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon

Sin Chew has only two items on the menu: the Satay Bee Hoon (from $5) and Cuttlefish Kang Kong (from $5). I got a $6 plate of the former to try, as I was there primarily for their satay bee hoon.

My plate of bee hoon was larger than I expected. After expertly selecting and cutting the ingredients to put onto the plate, the stall owner doused the dish in mounds of silky-smooth peanut gravy.

The dish included sliced pork, fresh prawns, chewy cuttlefish, cockles, tau pok, bee hoon, and satay sauce. The pork slices were slightly thin for my liking, but I liked how each piece soaked up the gravy. The cuttlefish and cockles were firm and chewy, without being overly fishy or briny.

The portion of rice noodles was generous, and the noodles themselves were well-cooked. Don’t leave them out for too long, though, as they can turn slightly mushy and clump together after absorbing the gravy. The satay sauce, on the other hand, was incredibly delicious.

It was thick, smooth, and mildly spicy, with just the right amount of crushed peanuts to add some texture to the overall dish. It coated the noodles and ingredients well, bringing everything together nicely.

The best part was that the sauce wasn’t overly rich or cloying, so it never felt too heavy or overwhelming—I could easily finish the dish on my own. If you’re new to this combination and unsure whether satay and bee hoon are to your liking, I’d suggest ordering a plate to share with your dining partner first.

I haven’t tried that many versions of satay bee hoon in Singapore, but one thing I’ve learned is that when you see a long, snaking queue at a hawker stall, there’s usually a good reason for it. That was certainly the case at Sin Chew, and I’d recommend giving it a try at least once in your lifetime.

Ambience at Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon

Located at the bustling Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre, Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon draws steady queues from the moment it opens at 11am. While the line can look daunting, it moves briskly thanks to the efficient service, which means the wait is usually well worth it.

With such a loyal following, Sin Chew opens only four days a week, so be sure to check the schedule carefully before making a trip.

Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon – Eatbook review

This was my first time trying satay bee hoon, and it certainly won’t be my last. Although the menu at Sin Chew is limited to just two dishes, what we tried delivered an impressive depth of flavour. Sometimes, less truly is more.

Each dish comes in three sizes, ranging from $5 to $7, making it ideal to share between two and even three diners. When the satay bee hoon cravings hit, you can be sure I’ll be back.
