Think of Tai Cheong Bakery and delicate, crumbly egg tarts would pop into mind immediately. Good news for Westies, because this famous Hong Kong bakery has just opened a new branch at Jem. This joins their Bukit Panjang Plaza outlet, their first outlet in the West.Â
Located at Basement One, you can’t miss their new store─it’s done in their signature mint green and brown, with old school mosaic flooring, wafting with the aroma of fresh bakes.

Tai Cheong Bakery’s delectable Hong Kong pastries are always a treat. Take their crowd-pleasing egg tarts for instance─these little gems are known for their soft, sweet and eggy custard in a flaky, cookie crust tart shell. Besides the Original ($2), there are other tart flavours, including Pandan ($2), Coconut ($3.20) and Tai Cheong’s latest creation, a Black Sugar Boba ($2.50) egg tart.Â

Apart from their egg tart selection, you’ll find other baked goodies that are just as delicious. Try the Mao Shan Wang Cheese Tart ($3.90), which has real durian pulp.Â

There are also savoury options like the hearty Chicken Pie ($3) that’s filled with creamy mushroom and tender chicken pieces, as well as the Char Siu Pie ($3.50).Â

The new Tai Cheong Bakery outlet at JEM is a takeaway joint. This means they won’t be serving hot snacks and cha chaan teng mains such their HK Dry Noodle ($9.90++) and Scrambled Eggs With Bolo Bun ($6.50++), which are otherwise available at the Holland Village and Ngee Ann City outlets.
While you’re at Jem, check out the newly opened Koung’s Wanton Mee that’s located in the same mall. Alternatively, for more Hong Kong style delicacies, read our review on another cha chaan teng─Tsui Wah. We also went on a food trail around Westgate, which is just adjacent to Jem!
