This New Joo Chiat Bakery Has Legit Egyptian Pastries Under $6

The Egyptian Baker is a new bakery in Joo Chiat

If you love bread and are looking for something other than your usual floss buns, then this new spot is for you. Located at Everitt Edge, in the heart of Joo Chiat, is The Egyptian Baker, a cosy little bakery that has gone viral for their Egyptian bakes. The new bakery offers everything from savoury breads to sweet treats, with most items priced under $6, so you won’t break the bank here.

At the helm of the bakery is Maha Elsahhar, a self-taught baker from Egypt who runs the operation single-handedly. To keep things interesting, she doesn’t keep a fixed menu and instead offers a rotating lineup of bakes and specials, updated weekly on their Instagram page.

You can choose from a wide range of pastries, including pies, flatbreads, rolls, and brownies, each baked fresh, in-house daily.

We loved the Muhammarah Manakeesh ($3.50), starring a soft and slightly chewy flatbread topped with a tangy and smoky muhammarah sauce. For the uninitiated, muhammarah is a roasted bell pepper dip made with walnuts, pomegranate molasses, and a fragrant blend of herbs and spices.

For something lighter on the palette, go for their delicious Zaatar Rolls ($4.50), featuring fluffy bread rolls filled with a herbaceous blend of toasted sesame seeds, thyme, and zesty sumac, AKA dried ground red berries.

The Egyptian Beef Goulash ($6.50) was our favourite of the lot: a savoury phyllo pie stuffed with a meaty beef filling, encased in a buttery, flaky crust.

The pie tasted even better when dipped in their house-made muhammarah sauce and creamy tahini yoghurt.

Those with a sweet tooth shouldn’t miss out on the Tahini Chocolate Brownie ($3).

The brownie was lightly crisp on the outside, while soft and fudgy on the inside. We also enjoyed its rich cocoa flavour, elevated by a touch of nuttiness from the tahini.

As the bakery is a small-scale business, everything’s made in limited quantities, so we recommend heading down early to beat the crowds and avoid missing out.

The Egyptian Baker is located at Everitt Edge, a 13-minute walk from Eunos MRT Station. Do note that they primarily operate as a takeaway bakery, with only a couple of tables and stools outside.

For more tasty bakes, check out Poh Guan Cake House for a traditional bakery with handmade pastries since the 1930s. Otherwise, read our guide to the best Katong cafes for more great eats in the area.
