The Rong Guang Kitchen has hotplate dishes in Hougang
Sambal stingray is a popular supper or zi char dish to share with your family or friends. But that is not to say you can’t have it during the day, as proven by the lunch crowd standing in line for the sambal stingray hotplate dish at The Rong Guang Kitchen.
Known as Rong Guang BBQ Seafood in Bedok, the owners have been serving up stingray and zi char since 1985. They have opened another stall at Hougang Mall with a unique twist: you can enjoy their well-loved supper dishes as hotplate dishes.

Their Hot Plate Stingray Rice Set ($9.90) with house-made sambal sauce is touted to be so popular that they are often sold out before the end of the day.
The stingray and sambal paired really well with rice. For folks who cannot handle the spice, you can eat it with the baked potato on the side to mellow down the heat.
The Hot Plate Pomfret Fish Rice Set ($9.90) is another crowd-pleaser that sells out quickly. This one comes with a choice of either house-made sambal or sweet and sour sauce. We got the latter sauce which was served on the side. Add however much you like according to your liking!
It is noteworthy that while hotplate dishes can be rather heavy on the palate, the above two items were not too greasy.
If you prefer noodles to rice, get the Hot Plate Chicken Noodle Set ($9.90). Bouncy ee mian is topped with a huge piece of chicken leg and some broccoli, then drenched in a herbal gravy. My favourite part was that the chicken meat fell off the bone with ease—there was no need to pick off the meat with our utensils or hands.
The stall is located inside Foodies’ Garden, a food court on the fourth level of Hougang Mall. The stall gets quite crowded by lunchtime, so we recommend visiting during non-peak hours to avoid a queue!
