Nothing, in my opinion, says comfort food more than a warm bowl of porridge. At TrulyTeochew, you’ll find that they serve a unique rendition of it: pao-fan style cuttlefish porridge.Â

Formerly a home-based business, the stall was started by an ex-financial lines underwriter, Tan Ziying. After quitting her job, she started a business selling Homemade Cuttlefish Teochew Porridge, of which she uses a 50-year-old recipe by her late grandmother. Ziying’s version is slightly healthier—she replaces rock sugar with Chinese herbs and uses no MSG.

A bowl here comes in two sizes: Regular ($7.80) and Large ($9). Regardless of which size you get, you’ll score yourself pao fan in a tasty and nourishing broth that’s made from boiling shiitake mushrooms, braised pork belly, scallops, and cuttlefish. It is then topped with a generous amount of sliced pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, beancurd skin, and shallots.Â

This hearty dish is said to be extremely flavourful, boasting sweet, savoury, and umami notes.Â

Their Homemade Cuttlefish Mee Sua ($9) is the latest addition to their menu, featuring silky wheat vermicelli noodles with stir-fried cuttlefish, pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, premium scallops, tau kee, shallots, and celery leaves in the same tasty broth.Â

While you’re there, be sure to also get a side of Hot Wings or Spring Rolls to go with your porridge, both of which will set you back $2 for two pieces.Â
