Uggli Muffins: $1.40 Muffin Stall With Over 50 Years Of History Opens At Jalan Besar

As someone with a sweet tooth, I’m constantly on the hunt for cheap and good bakes. One on my to-try list is Uggli Muffins, a popular hawker stall that recently opened a second outlet at Jalan Besar. It’s not hard to see why they’re so well-loved; their signature ‘ugly’ muffins that come with a crusty, caramelised top are priced below $2 each.

For those who are unaware, Uggli Muffins was previously a zi char stall in Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre, with its roots extending as far back as 1969. After the second-generation owner took over, the stall made the switch to muffins and cookies. They’ve since made a name for themselves over the past 17 years or so, churning out fresh bakes at wallet-friendly prices.

Located a five-minute walk from Jalan Besar MRT Station, the new store seems to be an upgrade from their previous location. There’s a bigger baking space, plus a few dine-in seats within. While we’re unsure about whether there’s a drinks menu, we do know that prices for their signature Uggli Baby Muffins are kept low at $1.40 to $1.70 per pop. There’s also a buy 10 get 2 free offer that you can take advantage of, if you’re sharing with friends.

What sets these muffins apart is their dark brown, crusty top, finished in the oven with a secret recipe. Irregularly shaped, these moreish treats are said to boast an intense flavour and a rich, caramelised sweetness. The flavours vary daily, with mainstays such as Oreo Cookies, Banana and Walnut, and Blueberry.

Do note that Uggli Muffins’ Toa Payoh stall is currently closed while its owner is away for reservist training. In the meantime, you can check out their new outlet for muffins, cookies, cakes and more!
