This New Chinatown Stall Has Mini Lava Cheesecakes In Matcha And D24 Flavours

Vic’s Mini Lava Cheesecake at Hong Lim Food Centre

I’d been seeing Vic’s Mini Lava Cheesecake pop up on my feed for a while now, and as a lava cheesecake fan myself—I’ve tried and loved the viral Paparch—I was curious to see if this was just a cute trend or the real deal. So I made my way down to Hong Lim Food Centre, where the stall is tucked away on the second floor.

Vic’s took over the former unit of the now-defunct Sabah Sandakan UFO Tart, right beside Hiong Kee Dumplings and diagonally opposite SL II Muffin, so it’s easy to walk past if you’re not specifically looking for it.

The cheesecakes are displayed behind the counter and freshly baked throughout the day. We visited on a weekday during lunch, and while there wasn’t much of a queue since most people were lining up for their meals instead, we did see a steady trickle of people stopping by to order.

As the name suggests, mini lava cheesecakes are the whole point here. These decadent desserts are usually available in four flavours: Original ($3.50), Chocolate ($3.80), Taro ($3.80), and Matcha ($3.80).

Each lava cheesecake is intentionally served chilled and made without cake flour, resulting in pure, dense cakes that promise a molten centre. I tried three of the four classic flavours—since the Taro was unavailable that day—along with a seasonal D24 ($4.80) flavour.

We started with the Original, which set the tone for the rest of the tasting. The centre was soft and oozy, while the top layer stayed intact enough to hold its shape.

I usually lean towards richer, stronger-tasting cheesecakes, but this one was cheesy without feeling heavy, making it a good pick if you prefer your desserts lighter on the palate. The Original flavour wasn’t overly sweet or cloying either, so it was easy to finish in a couple of bites.

The Chocolate cheesecake was my favourite. It tasted like melted milk chocolate, and unlike the Original, this one had a mousse-like texture. It wasn’t quite like Saizeriya’s iconic chocolate lava dessert, which has runny chocolate sauce spilling out the moment you cut into it. I also noticed a slight bitterness from the cocoa, which added some depth.

As a matcha cheesecake fan, I had to try theirs. It leaned more cheesecake-forward, with a light matcha flavour, and unlike the other flavours, it wasn’t particularly molten—its texture was softer and pillowy. The green tea flavour came through as a mild, earthy note rather than anything grassy or bitter, which makes it a safe entry point if you’re not a fan of strong matcha desserts.

Then there’s the D24 Durian, the priciest and easily the most distinctive of the bunch. This one genuinely tasted like real durian pulp, just softer, and you could actually see the fibres running through it.

As a durian fan, this worked for me. It was creamy and mildly bittersweet, with a buttery texture that coated the mouth nicely, though it was the least molten out of everything I tried.
