Fa Si Xi Traditional Chinese Dessert is a mahjong-themed cafe in Lavender
Those who like to “chi” when playing mahjong can do so more literally at Fa Si Xi Traditional Chinese Dessert, a new cafe near Lavender MRT Station that’s themed after the Chinese tile-based game.
Indeed, the entire space incorporates mahjong, along with popular casino games, into its space. Some tables are fitted with literal mahjong tiles under their glass surfaces, while others display anything from poker to roulette.
The second storey has mahjong wallpaper covering the entire floor, and you’ll find a stack of unusually large mahjong tiles just vibing in the corner.
In short, Fa Si Xi is a celebration of all things gambling. And no, you aren’t allowed to gamble here, in case you are wondering.
As for the fare, Fa Si Xi offers a range of traditional Chinese desserts. The best way to sample what the cafe has to offer is by ordering the Da Xi Si ($11.80). Black sesame paste, peanut paste, glutinous rice cakes, and curry fish balls make up this quartet of dishes, and they are all done pretty well. The pastes, in particular, were fragrant, smooth, and pleasantly sweet.

Other hot desserts to try include the Sweet Pear Soup with Peach Gum ($10.80), Red Bean Soup with Mini Rice Ball ($5.80), and the interesting Pistachio Paste ($8.80)—you won’t find many Chinese dessert places that offer this particular paste! Unfortunately, the latter was sold out when we were there.
As for cold desserts, Fa Si Xi has options such as Mango with Pomelo Sago ($7.80), Durian Chendol Ice ($10.80), and Grass Jelly All In ($12.80). The latter of these really hit the spot on the sultry day we tried it, thanks to its combination of grass jelly, taro, and other refreshing ingredients.
Should you be looking for something heartier, there are some main dishes for you to order, too. These include the Signature Penang Prawn Mee ($12.80), Ipoh Hor Fun ($8.80), Luncheon Egg Soup Macaroni ($7.80) and more.
