This Maxwell Stall Has Fried Nian Gao, Sweet Potato Balls And More From $1

Lakeview (Upper Thomson) Kim Goreng Pisang has $1 fritters in CBD

Located in the famous Maxwell Food Centre, Lakeview (Upper Thomson) Kim Goreng Pisang is a haven for fans of fritters. 

While the stall has popular treats such as you tiao, butterfly bun, and hum ji peng on its menu, it also offers fruit-based fritters such as pisang goreng and cempedak goreng. You’ll even find fried 3-in-1 nian gao here!

We tried their Fried Banana ($1), Fried Cempedak ($1), 3-in-1 Fried Nian Gao ($1.30), and Fried Sweet Potato balls ($3 for 10 pcs).

While their pisang goreng tasted nothing out of the norm, its familiar taste is exactly what makes it so nostalgic. The crispy golden batter gave way to a soft, sweet banana inside, creating that perfect balance of crunchy and tender. 

For those who are unfamiliar, cempedak goreng means fried cempedak, a fruit native to Southeast Asia. The soft, creamy flesh of the fruit has a distinctively sweet and slightly tangy flavor—think of the taste of jackfruit with the consistency of durian! This cempedak goreng, however, was particularly and pleasantly sweet, and it oddly reminded me of honey too. 

The 3-in-1 fried nian gao instantly took me back to Chinese New Year, reminding me of the times when my mum would fry it every year. The crispy batter provided a satisfying crunch, while the nian gao inside was perfectly chewy with just the right sweetness. However, I felt it could have been even better if it were fried in thicker, chunkier pieces, so that the chewy texture of the nian gao could stand out more and deliver a more satisfying bite.

The last item we tried was the fried sweet potato balls, which were one of our favourites. To be fair, you can’t really mess fried sweet potatoes up, but this one was particularly chewy and sweet, it almost tasted like sweet-potato-flavoured mochi!

Other items on the menu include their you can try their Fried Yam ($1.10), Fried Sweet Potato ($1.10), Fried Tapioca ($1.10), Fried Green Bean ($1.10), Sesame Balls ($1.20), Yam Cake ($1.40), Spring Roll ($1.40), and Curry Puff ($1.40).

We recommend getting their fritters earlier in the day, so you can catch them when they’re hot and fresh!
