Lok lok is a popular late-night snack in Singapore as it’s usually cheap and comes in a wide variety. Recently, we were invited to Kayu Kayu, a new cafe in Bugis offering a total of 30 skewered food items, all priced at $0.99 each. Not only are the skewers affordable and nett-priced, but their food is also Muslim-friendly.

The skewer menu is divided into four categories: classic, meat, seafood, and veggies. No matter the category, all items cost $0.99 each. Do note that the skewers are coated in the same peppery seasoning that’s mildly spicy.

Starting with the classic items, we got the Salmon Cheese Tofu, Taiwan Sausage, and Mini Mantou.

All three were decent, but we especially enjoyed the Salmon Cheese Tofu and Taiwan Sausage. The former features a soft, flavourful tofu cube packed with melted mozzarella cheese within, while the latter is a sweet, chewy sausage sliced into two bite-sized pieces.

As for the meat, we were recommended the Beef Shortplates and Tenderloin Beef Cube. Between the two, we preferred the former as the cut of beef was more tender, whereas the latter was a tad overcooked.

We found the seafood skewers to be more delicious than the meat items; the Tiger Prawn was fresh and grilled to achieve just the right amount of char, while the Thai Fish Cake was briny and chewy. 

There are also eight veggie options to choose from, and we got Lotus, Cauliflower, and King Oyster Mushrooms. These were decently executed, but nothing much to shout about. 

The seasoning gets a bit salty after a while, so order a drink to wash down everything. My colleague tried their Strawberry Ice Matcha ($8.90), which leaned sweet and creamy, while I quenched my thirst with Plumwood Sunrise ($7.90), a sweet-tangy concoction of yuzu, ume plum, pink grapefruit, and sparkling soda.

The cafe is located along Jalan Pisang, where you’ll find plenty of other cafes and eateries. For easy access, it’s an eight-minute walk from Bugis MRT Station.
