To me, nothing beats a freshly steamed bao as a midday pick-me-up. That’s why I was excited to discover Bao Zi Dian, a quaint little shop hidden in a quiet industrial estate in Ubi, selling various handmade bao and dim sum from just $1.20.

There are over 20 different items on the menu, including a wide range of bao packed with meat and sweet fillings.

Apart from their low prices and variety, what makes their bao special is its thin skin, which is said to be particularly soft, fluffy, and moist in texture. Patrons claim that each bao is packed with ingredients, so you won’t be left feeling hungry.

A crowd favourite here is their giant Ye Zi Mei ($4.50), which comes packed full with juicy pork, mushrooms, Chinese sausage, and hard-boiled egg.

You also can’t miss out on their Kou Rou Bao ($2), which comes stuffed with a huge chunk of fatty pork belly.

There’s also the popular He Ye Fan ($4.50), starring tender pieces of chicken, char siew, juicy mushrooms, Chinese sausage, and salted egg in sticky glutinous rice, wrapped in a lotus leaf for added fragrance.

Bao Zi Dian also offers other unique flavours such as Ka Ya Bao ($1.30) and Du Du Bao ($1.30), the former filled with a fragrant house-made pandan kaya jam and the latter known for its rich, finely-shredded coconut filling.
