Known for a high level of marbling, Wagyu beef’s fats melt when cooked to create an exceptionally rich and juicy texture you won’t get from other types of beef. Unfortunately, its price tag usually reflects how tasty it is, so a Wagyu feast is often reserved for special occasions. But Wagyu fans, we heard your cries, so we’ve dug out 10 places with Wagyu beef that are reasonably priced so you won’t have to spend a week eating bread after splurging on your favourite meat.
1. Sandaime Bunji
It’s hard for a meat lover to refrain from this mountain of beef served at Sandaime Bunji. Wagyu Roast Beef Set ($19.90++ during lunch, $24.90++ during dinner) comes with 250g of medium-rare roasted beef atop a bowl of rice and barley. It’s limited to 15 sets for lunch and dinner respectively, so be sure to head down early! If you need more persuasion, the store is fronted by a wooden signboard and gives off the cosy feel of a traditional Japanese eatery so you and your friends can #throwback to your last Japan trip while eating.

2. The Burning Oak
If you thought Wagyu is only available at atas restaurants, think again. The Burning Oak is a hawker stall at Bedok Marketplace serving a decent Wagyu Rump Bento ($14). It might not be the most high-quality Wagyu with perfect marbling, but it’s definitely one of the most value-for-money. New on their menu is Foie Gras and Wagyu Beef Bowl ($20) topped with an onsen egg and their special gravy that’s made in-house.

3. Wafuken
Wafuken offers their signature Truffle Wagyu Donburi at $24++. The Wagyu rump with marbling score 8 is cooked sous vide for 12 hours and comes with a truffle fragrance that we all know and love. The joint takes pride in offering healthy Japanese donburi, which is why they’ve provided an option of brown rice perfect for those who have resolved to #eatclean this year.

4. Tenkaichi Japanese BBQ Restaurant

5. Kinsa Sushi
If you don’t think you can finish 250g of Wagyu beef from Sundaime Bunji, go for Kinsa Sushi’s Wagyu Don ($24.80++) instead. It includes 60g of A4 Kagoshima Wagyu seated with an onsen egg on a bed of Japanese white rice. The tender, pan-fried slices of Wagyu beef are flavour bombs that make this simple-looking dish a meal you’ll remember.

6. MASA Steak and Hamburg
Wagyu connoisseurs will coo at the beautiful marbling of Wagyu beef at MASA. The restaurant serves Wagyu flown in directly from Japan and their menu is made up of mostly Wagyu dishes with a handful of non-beef items. From Wagyu Beef Carpaccio ($20++) to Charcoal Grilled Wagyu Steak (price differs based on cut), Wagyu lovers can prepare to go wild here. The most pocket-friendly mains are MASA Hamburg Steak ($28++) and MASA Premium Burger ($28++), which features a Wagyu beef patty sandwiched between two fluffy buns and BBQ sauce.

7. The Sushi Bar
The Sushi Bar has been amassing queues for their highly coveted Kaisen Chirashi Don ($26.90++) and Salmon Aburi Roll  ($16.90++), but not many know they also serve some mean beef. Wagyu Don ($34.90++) comes with generous portions of beef slices seared with a pink centre to create a tender bite. Beef lovers on a budget might want to go for their Sirloin Steak ($16.90++) that is, interestingly, presented on a leaf.

8. Sushi Jin
Wagyu Don ($35++) and Wagyu Foie Gras Don ($39++) are served as lunch sets at Sushi Jin and they each feature melt-in-your mouth beef slices over rice doused in truffle soy sauce. Unagi lovers who can’t get a seat at Man Man can also come here during lunch for Unagi Don ($29++). Even though sashimi here is a little pricey, with five pieces of salmon sashimi going for $16++, they are flown in from Tokyo’s Tsukiji market three times a week so you can be sure you’re getting the quality you paid for.

9. Sumiya
Sumiya is a quaint Japanese restaurant tucked at the 12th storey of Orchard Central. Many rave about their affordable set lunch specials like Mixed Kaisen Bara Don ($20.80++) and Seared Japanese Wagyu Shabu Don with Crab Meat & Salmon Roe ($33.80++). The latter is topped with crab meat, salmon roe and a marinated soft-boiled egg to give you a Japanese version of a surf and turf. 10. Izy Dining & Bar
Izy is a modern izakaya great for some after-work chilling. Their Wagyu Truffle Don ($38++) is the priciest on this list, but the decadent combination of truffle shavings and Wagyu will be worth your buck. The juicy chunks of Wagyu beef along with actual truffle shavings will give you a foodgasm with every bite.
