A Beautiful Day in Changi City Point

a beautiful day flatlay

The East has been on a roll lately, with new food places popping up left and right. We’ve seen novelty hawker stalls such as Sticks ‘N’ Bowls, and online-stores-turned-physical-bakeries such as Puffs And Peaks. Here’s a new cafe to add to your ‘East side, best side’ prerogative—A Beautiful Day.

This cafe’s gorgeous interiors wowed me when they first popped up on my Instagram feed. With that, my colleague and I took a trip down to Changi City Point, eager to see if their food matched up to the aesthetics.

Food at A Beautiful Day

chilli crab spaghetti a beautiful day

The first dish we tried on our visit was the Chili Crab Pasta ($12.90+), with spaghetti tossed in a chilli crab sauce, alongside crab meat, and baby spinach leaves.

While the chilli crab I’m acquainted with is one that’s spicy-sweet, the sauce here tended towards the spicier end of the spectrum. It was seriously piquant, as evidenced by the fresh cut chillies tossed within. I felt that they could dial up the sweetness, or even introduce a tangy element, to balance the sauce.

Ingredient-wise, the crab meat was slightly mushy, few and far between. However, in light of the affordable price tag, this can be overlooked. Meanwhile, the spaghetti was cooked al dente, and kept their firm strands even after we had taken some time to photograph the food.

a beautiful day peri chicken don

For our next main, we got the Peri Peri Chicken Don ($10.90+), comprising char-grilled chicken slathered with the cafe’s signature peri peri sauce, served with rice, cucumber shreds, and an onsen egg.

My colleague and I really enjoyed their peri peri sauce, which was bright, zesty, and packed with spice. It complemented the chicken superbly well, so much that I could forgive how the meat was a tad dry.

While this bowl was kept rather simple, I enjoyed the addition of onsen egg, which tied the dish together with its creaminess. The cucumber shreds also helped refresh my palate between bites of the flavourful peri peri sauce.

a beautiful day bandung pancakes

To complement the savouries, we ordered the Pink Sugar’s Bandung Souffle Pancake ($17.90+). In line with the cafe’s pink theme, these pancakes are dressed with sweet pink rose-flavoured cream, dried rose petals, and fresh berries, then served on a pink mirrored tray.

These pancakes were moist all the way through, reminiscent of the ones I’d previously had at Nirvana Dessert Cafe. I liked how they weren’t too eggy either, tinged with a slight butteriness.

The cream had a sweetness that lacked body. While I expected it to taste cloying as a result, it felt surprisingly light, with floral undertones from the rose flavouring. As someone who isn’t big on sugary treats, I found that pairing the pancakes with the tart berries helped to cut through the sweetness of the cream.

a beautiful day red velvet latte

To wash everything down, we got the Red Velvet Latte ($7+)—a beautiful sight to behold, with its deeper pink colour, and heart-shaped latte art. Its flavour matched up to the aesthetics, milky with rich chocolate notes, and a slight bitterness to round out each sip. This latte would be perfect for me, if the cafe had dialled down the sweetness by a notch.

Ambience at A Beautiful Day

a beautiful day ambience

A Beautiful Day is located in Changi City Point, a few minutes away from the Expo MRT Station. There are plenty of seats to go around, and even outdoor ones available, if you’re looking for more alfresco vibes.

Interior-wise, A Beautiful Day might be one of the most gorgeous cafes I’ve visited. There’s a pink-themed corner, decked in neon decals, seashell-shaped chairs, and a floral telephone booth. At the other end of the cafe, the space transforms into something warmer—adorned with yellow walls, wooden fixtures, and pots of botany.

The verdict

I’m quite skeptical about IG-worthy cafes—they’re usually overpriced, and the food isn’t that great. However, A Beautiful Day pleasantly surprised me with their offerings, where each dish was reasonably priced and thoughtfully prepared. The menu has some hits and misses, but considering how new they are, I believe they have so much potential to improve. With that, if you’re looking for a gorgeous cafe to dine at, without compromising your stomach or your wallet, head down to A Beautiful Day.
