Old-school breakfast spots in Singapore have my heart—nothing spells comfort more than delicious charcoal-grilled kaya toast and bittersweet kopi to me. If you can relate, there’s a new kid on the block to check out: Ah Nam at Singapore Management University (SMU). This new eatery sells local breakfast and lunch items all under $10!

You can expect the must-have Kaya Butter Toast ($3+) here, but we recommend trying their Yam Butter Toast ($3.50+) for something a little different. For the complete breakfast experience, get the set for $6.60+ instead, comprising two soft-boiled eggs and a hot kopi or teh. The yam butter toast comes with a generous spread of sweet yam paste and a thick square of butter.

If rice is your preferred choice of carbs, the Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak ($7.90+) and Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak ($6.90+) are great choices. You get butterfly pea flower-infused coconut rice, paired with either deep-fried, crispy chicken, or tender curry chicken depending on your liking.

Noodle lovers can opt for the Prawn Mee Soup or Ban Mian ($5.90) instead, perfect for the rainy season that’s upon us. FYI, the latter comes in both dry and soup versions.

If you’re dropping by for a quick coffee run, get their Butter Kopi ($2.40) or Butter Kopi O ($2.20) for a robust cup of coffee.
If you love yam as much as we do, read our SuuKee Coffee review for orh nee butter toast and taro kopi in One-north. Alternatively, read our Dhoby Ghaut food guide for more good eats in the area.
