Arguably the most famous stall in the hawker centre, Ho Bee Roasted Food consistently draws long queues for its succulent char siew, crispy sio bak, and tender roast duck. Fans praise the meats for being well-roasted and reasonably priced. You can get each on its own—Char Siew Rice ($4), Roasted Pork Rice ($4), or Roasted Duck Rice ($4)—but most go for a hearty combo such as the Roasted Pork Char Siew Rice ($4.50), or all three at once with the Each Person Set ($9.80).

A plate of Chicken Rice here starts from $4, promising soft and juicy chicken, fragrant rice that’s not too oily, and tangy chilli sauce. Another stall that draws endlessly long queues, Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle offers fishball noodles done right. Their Mee Pok Dry (from $4), for instance, gets you a bowl of chilli-tossed noodles, minced meat, fishcakes, and of course, fresh and large fishballs that have a great bite. While mee pok and mee kia are probably the preferred noodle choices for many, the stall also offers the likes of Bee Hoon Soup (from $4) or Mee Tai Mak Soup (from $4) for those who want something different.

Whether it’s breakfast or a rainy day pick-me-up, the gruel at Xiang Ji Porridge hits the spot. Fans go for the Century Egg & Pork Porridge ($4), where umami slices of century egg and juicy pork are mixed into a thick, Cantonese-style congee. Those who enjoy their innards can opt for the Pork & Liver Porridge ($4.50), where fresh and tender pork liver is the star of the dish. Run by a young couple, Sumo Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee dishes out decent plates of Hokkien Mee. Prices start from $6, which isn’t the most affordable around, but regular patrons think the quality here more than makes up for that. The noodles are said to have a flavourful broth, with a subtle wok hei and the interesting inclusion of ikan billis. Like Hock Heng, this stall offers Seafood Noodles (from $5) that are packed with prawns, sliced fish, fish balls and more, with the noodles tossed in an addictive sauce mix. There’s even a Fishball Noodles (from $3.50) for those who want something simpler. But of course, you won’t go wrong with the classic Sliced Fish Soup (from $5.50).

10. Konomi Zen
Konomi Zen is known for its value-for-money Japanese dishes—its signboard even states that it has “restaurant standards” at “hawker prices”. That’s a bold claim to make, but the prices speak for themselves. The most affordable items on their menu, the Oyako Don and Chicken Teriyaki Don, cost a mere $4.50. Even their Salmon Don is said to be just $5, despite coming with quite a huge slab of salmon.
