If you’ve come across our Chiang Mai food guide, you would have read about Busarin, a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant that specialises in home-style Northern Thai cuisine.

busarin chiang mai ambience

The cosy, lunch-only spot was started by the chef behind Magnolia Cafe, another Michelin-minted eatery right next door. Busarin sports a unique English cottage theme, with warm wooden furniture, light pink walls, and floral cushions for a pop of colour.

busarin khao soi

There’s only one type of khao soi AKA curry noodles on the menu: Beef Khao Soi (฿250/~S$9.90). For the unitiated, khao soi is an award-winning Northern Thai dish of egg noodles, coconut curry, a protein, and crispy noodle shreds, finished with condiments such as raw onions and pickled mustard greens.

Busarin’s version features a thick and concentrated gravy with a generous pile of deep-fried noodle strands, along with tender beef cubes.

If you’re feeling adventurous, order the Southern Inspired Fish Curry with Rice Vermicelli (฿170/~S$6.70). This tangy, flavourful curry comes with strips of flaky fish, green papaya, and bamboo shoots.

You also get a side of vermicelli noodles and fresh greens to dunk into the sour curry.

busarin roti

There’s also a Burmese-inspired “Hunglay” Curry with Pork in Burmese Hinlay Spices (฿250/~S$9.90), which comes with crispy roti wedges. This signature pork curry, which takes two days to prepare, is aromatic and flavourful, with a kick of spice at the end.

If all that isn’t enough, round up your meal with their Durian Sticky Rice(฿150/~S$5.90): warm glutinous rice topped with sweet durian pulp, served in a creamy, coconutty sauce.

Alternatively, the Sweetened Black Glutinous Rice with Taro (฿60/~S$2.40) is a sure-win; this comforting dessert is reminiscent of pulut hitam, zhnged-up with yam bits.

For a more casual dining experience, head to Khao Soi Mae Sai, another Michelin-approved eatery in Chiang Mai that sells chicken curry noodles and more. Otherwise, there’s also Mitte Mitte, a gorgeous two-storey cafe in the Chang Moi district that has delicious bagel sandwiches and brunch dishes!

Opening hours: Mon-Sat 11am to 3pm
