Capitol Milk Bar: The Cafe Your Grandparents Paktor-ed At Is Alive Again With Burgers And Milkshakes

3rd July 2019

Relive the past at Capitol Milk Bar

Capitol Milk Bar Food

Ask the older folks in da’ house and they will agree that the hottest spot in town used to be Creameries Milk Bar at the old Capitol building. Opened in 1938, this joint was later known as Magnolia Snack Bar, with branches all over our little red dot up up until the ‘80s. While the OG store is no longer around, you can still relive it all at The Capitol Kempinski’s newly opened Capitol Milk Bar.

Capitol Milk Bar Ambience

With red leather booth seats that remind us of Pops’ from Riverdale, this retro diner will bring in flocks of Instagrammers looking to up their feed.

Capitol Milk Bar Burger

More than just a pretty joint, this place dishes out hearty burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes. Lure your IG boyfriend here by tempting him with The Capitol ($19++). Featuring pulled pork that’s sandwiched together with pickled cucumber, yuzu cabbage slaw, and apple butter BBQ sauce, this burger had a nice tart sweetness.

All burgers come with a choice of a charcoal brioche bun, multi-grain bun or sesame wheat bun, all of which are made in-house. I’m more of a pillowy burger bun kinda person, so I didn’t really fancy the multi-grain which was a little too hard for my liking.

If you don’t have much cash in your pockets, you can opt for their Classic New Yorker ($9++) instead. The cheapest main on the menu, the hot dog comes with a juicy pork sausage, and is packed with tons of flavours, thanks to the accompanying cucumber relish and mustard. There’s also a 1-meter long hot dog for sharing at $36++.

The Capitol Milk Bar Mac & Cheese ($10++) was surprisingly good. Whipped up with parmesan and mozzarella, the mac and cheese also came with peas which gave a nutty tang to the rich dish.

Capitol Milk Bar Milkshake

Their milkshakes go back to basic—i.e. they are not freakshakes with OTT toppings. They have the usual flavours like Nutella, strawberry and vanilla, but it is their local flavours that you should raise your hands for. The Milo Dino Milkshake ($14++) ends with a nice malty note, while the Singapore Dash Milkshake ($14++) is essentially blended up chendol.
