If you’re looking to sample Penang’s hawker fare in one place, Chulia Street Night Market is the obvious stop. It’s a long hawker street filled with all the classics, such as char kway teow, oyster omelette, assam laksa and more, with broad appeal among locals and tourists alike.

One stall you won’t—and shouldn’t—miss is Mother And Son Wonton Mee Stall. Run by a mother-and-son duo, it regularly draws long queues for its noodles.

Priced from just RM7 (S$2.20), a bowl of Wonton Mee here is as old school as it gets. Dark soy sauce-tossed noodles, char siew, vegetables, and steamed wontons. It’s a comforting bowl of noodles that’s elevated by the pile of chunky, crispy, and fresh pork lard.

Another noodle stall to check out is Chulia Street Curry Mee. Priced from RM7 (S$2.20), expect a coconutty curry broth with prawns, fishballs, tau pok, thick bee hoon, and plenty of raw cockles that give the soup a briny lift. The sambal on the side packs a punch, but mixed in, it deepens the flavour nicely. Ask for less sambal if you’re spice-shy!

Drop by Chulia Street Lok Lok for some good ol’ Malaysian street skewers. There’s a great variety of skewers here you can enjoy deep-fried or boiled, and each skewer goes for an affordable price. The items are priced between RM0.80 (S$0.30) and RM2.40 (S$0.80).

For a simple but charming dessert, don’t miss APOM Egg Waffles. This old woman who operates the stall went viral for her age and the fact that you can get her snacks for just RM0.80 (S$0.30). Don’t expect any fancy flavours, but they’re perfect crispy, crepe-like bites to munch on while walking through the night market.

So if you’re visiting Penang, do consider stopping by Chulia Street Night Market for some solid eats!
