Hai Sheng Carrot Cake has $2 chai tow kway at Bendemeer
If you walk past Bendemeer Market & Food Centre in the morning, youโll often see a long queue gathered in front of Hai Sheng Carrot Cake. This queue usually dissipates before 10am, as thatโs when the stall sells out for the day. There are two reasons for this popularity: one, because the fried carrot cake here is excellent, and two, because prices here start as low as $2.
Curiously, Hai Sheng isnโt on Google Maps, despite being one of the more well-known chai tow kway stalls in the area. It has an interesting ordering system: the uncle who runs the stall cooks all the black carrot cake for one batch of people, then switches to white for the next batch. So if you order black carrot cake while heโs cooking white, you may have to wait a few minutes for him to switch over.
Regardless of whether you order white or black carrot cake, the stall whips them up excellently. With those soft radish bits, aromatic wok hei, and generous amounts of egg, fans of chai tow kway will likely be impressed.
Furthermore, Hai Shengโs particularly piquant chilli and copious amounts of chye poh give the dish a highly savoury quality. If youโd like to balance that with some sweetness, you can go for the black carrot cake option instead of white.
