Adding on to the slew of food fairs happening in June—think Takashimaya Food Fiesta and Yishun MRT Pasar Malam—Isetan has launched the Hanabi Matsuri Food Festival at Waterway Point from 25 June to 7 July 2024. You can get a myriad of famous sweet and savoury Japanese delights, in line with Japan’s annual firework festival of the same name!

Starting strong, we had award-winning Chicken Karaage ($17.90) from Higo Marunoya. This is a must-try—they’ve won Japan’s Kumamoto Fried Chicken Championship for 4 consecutive years!

While this may be slightly pricey, it was definitely worth every penny. The karaage had a good balance of crispy, salty skin and tender meat, making this a highly addictive and delicious snack.

Next, we had Mentaiko Mayo Takoyaki ($9) from Nakayama Shokuhin.

Served in a pack of six, each tako ball contains thick-cut pieces of octopus, topped with mentaiko sauce and sprinkled with seaweed. Aside from the slightly gingery taste of the tako ball, my colleague and I enjoyed snacking on this very much.

Treat yourself to Kumamon’s Ningyoyaki, a well-known Japanese pancake. Choose between six different filling flavours, namely plain, cheese, sweet potato, custard, chocolate, and the traditional red bean paste, and get your treats in the shape of the beloved Kumamon character!

Priced at $5 per piece, we highly recommend the custard flavour that’s wonderfully rich and creamy. It’s also not too sweet, allowing you to feast on this without it getting too jelak!

If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, opt for the Strawberry Shaved Ice ($12) from Itoshima Farm. Comprising thinly sliced fresh strawberries that are layered with whipped cream and condensed milk, this dessert is the perfect way to end your feast!
